Job summary

SOLV Energy is seeking a Design Engineer II, Substation to own the preliminary design lifecycle for utility-scale solar and BESS projects.

You will coordinate with engineering, procurement, estimating, and scheduling to deliver a 10% design package and support BD and estimating through handoff. The role emphasizes collaboration, technical leadership, and adherence to industry standards while enabling remote work.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution.
• PE licensure is a nice-to-have, not a must.
• Minimum of 3+ years of experience in electrical substation engineering.
• Demonstrated proficiency in electrical design software (AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar).
• Strong understanding of substation design principles, protection schemes, and industry standards (IEEE, NEC, NESC, etc).
• Thorough understanding of local, state, and federal regulations related to electrical engineering and solar development.
• Familiarity with utility interconnection requirements and contract language.
• In-depth knowledge of applicable building codes, engineering principles, and industry best practices.
• Effective communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
• Ability to travel up to 10%

Responsibilities

• Own the first-pass preliminary substation design approach for assigned pursuits and projects.
• Review client documents, technical exhibits, PPAs, interconnection agreements, and related project information.
• Serve as the primary substation design SME for assigned projects and coordinate inputs from multiple teams.
• Lead development of the 10% substation design, including single-line diagrams and equipment sizing.
• Coordinate with estimating and scheduling to align design, quantities, schedule, and assumptions.
• Review estimates for technical completeness and identify gaps or scope items.
• Deliver the owner reviewed preliminary substation design for estimating and BD.
• Participate in client meetings to review technical exhibits and requirements.
• Support contractual exhibit reviews, markups, and technical responses for LNTP.
• Communicate design decisions, risks, and required inputs clearly to stakeholders.
• Prepare RFIs, comments, and handoff details to HV engineering team.
• Review received proposals for technical scope and commercial alignment.
• Align subcontractor proposals with project scope, schedule, and LNTP requirements.
• Prepare engineering scope and handoff materials for Preconstruction Engineering.
• Assist handoff to Preconstruction Engineering with clear transfer of information.
• Review and approve preliminary design deliverables for compliance with requirements.
• Propose cost-effective alternatives and resolve design challenges with teams.
• Maintain documentation of design iterations, decisions, and handoff material.
• Identify recurring issues and suggest process improvements.
• Assign and coordinate work for designers and interns; ensure quality and schedule.
• Mentor junior team members and identify training needs on substation design.
