Syms Strategic Group is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer (Production Support) to manage day-to-day operations of complex cloud systems. The role requires deep experience with AWS/Azure, Linux/Windows, scripting, and automation, while ensuring compliance with VA standards.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in systems engineering or related field, production environments.
• Experience with SQL query and monitoring (3+ years).
• Strong proficiency in Linux/Unix and Windows operating systems.
• Experience with system administration tasks including user management, permissions, and system monitoring.
• Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell for automation.
• Experience with automation tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef, SaltStack).
• Knowledge of IaC tools such as CloudFormation.
• Experience with monitoring tools (DynaTrace, ScienceLogic, CloudWatch).
• Ability to troubleshoot and optimize system performance and reliability.
• Understanding of network protocols, firewalls, and VPN setup.
• Experience with network monitoring and diagnostic tools.
• Experience with secure best practices for production systems.
• Experience with implementing security measures and audits.
• Knowledge of databases (AWS RDS SQL Server, Oracle) and backup/recovery.
• Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines.
• Familiarity with version control (Git) and CI/CD tools (GitHub Actions, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and teamwork.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
• Attention to detail for system stability and data integrity.
• Ability to adapt to new technologies and processes.
• Willingness to be on-call for production support.
• Strong documentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform high-level, day-to-day operational support of complex application cloud systems.
• Develop solutions to routine technical problems of limited scope.
• Follow standard practices and procedures for data analysis and decision making.
• Detect, isolate, document, report, and resolve outages or problems in production systems.
• Document problems in logging and discrepancy reporting tools.
• Work directly with customers in day-to-day activities.
• Respond to user calls regarding hardware and software problems, escalating when required.
• Communicate status of key issues to users and senior management.
• Maintain computing infrastructure through upgrades and maintenance.
• Implement continuous improvement through IT systems or procedures.
• Maintain inventory of system assets.
• Ensure compliance with VA standards and security policies.
• Provide documentation, training, and additional duties as assigned.
