Job summary

Pena4 Inc. is seeking an experienced Medical Coder (Inpatient) for a 100% remote contractor role in Jersey City, NJ. The coder will assign ICD-10-CM/PCS codes for inpatient hospital services and support accurate DRG assignments, quality reporting, and regulatory compliance.

Required: at least 5 years IP PCS coding experience, CCS certification, and familiarity with Cerner/PowerChart/3M. Start date is immediate; per-case pay rate applies.

Qualifications

• Minimum of five (5) years of HIM and inpatient facility coding experience.
• Associates degree required in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related field; Bachelor's degree preferred.
• CCS certification required; additional credentials preferred (RHIA, RHIT, CCS-P, CPC, CPMA, COC, CIC, CRC).
• Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, MS-DRGs, APR-DRGs, POAs, HACs, PSIs and payer-specific guidelines.
• Strong understanding of documentation standards and coding guidelines (AHA, CMS, AHIMA).

Responsibilities

• Review inpatient medical records and assign accurate ICD-10-CM/PCS codes.
• Ensure codes support MS-DRG assignment and SOI/ROM.
• Maintain coding accuracy and productivity benchmarks (min. 2 charts/hour).
• Collaborate with CDI, compliance, and billing teams to resolve coding issues.
• Participate in internal and external audits and education initiatives.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA.
