Job summary

The Hanover Insurance Group is seeking an Underwriting Specialist Specialty – Merit Specialty (Wholesale). This full-time role may be hybrid or remote in the US (excluding NY & CA), requiring travel for meetings with wholesale partners as needed.

You will handle technical underwriting, portfolio management and sales activities to grow profitable Specialty portfolios, collaborating across Hanover’s teams and markets while maintaining favorable pricing and risk selection.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• Generally 3–7+ years specialty or standard commercial lines experience.
• 3–4+ years’ experience driving agency relationships resulting in profitable new and renewal business.
• Ability to adapt quickly to change, analyze problems and think creatively.
• Excellent communication with internal/external partners and sound judgment in underwriting matters.
• Agile and adaptive, with strong teamwork and prioritization skills.

Responsibilities

• Transacts business with wholesale trading partners and underwrites new and renewal Specialty accounts.
• Applies technical, sales and analytical skills to provide insurance solutions.
• Uses underwriting tools and rate/expense components to follow guidelines.
• Generates clear rating instructions and supports proposals to agents.
• Manages portfolio to meet gross written premium, profitability and mix goals.
• Identifies opportunities, negotiates with agents, and builds productive relationships.
