Job summary

Roxbury Community College seeks an on-campus Project Access Peer Mentor to support RCC students by connecting them with resources, sharing approved information, and helping them navigate non-academic barriers.

As part of Learn & Earn, you will conduct peer check-ins, assist with Rox Box activities, participate in outreach and workshops, and maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries while fostering an inclusive student experience.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with RCC services or willingness to learn available student-support and basic-needs resources.

Responsibilities

  • Provide peer support and check-ins through active listening and connection to resources.
  • Share information about RCC services and warm referrals to Project Access staff when needed.
  • Assist with Rox Box activities, welcome students, stock supplies, and support an accessible student experience.
  • Conduct classroom visits, campus outreach, tabling, and events to promote Project Access and resources.
  • Support Project Access workshops, orientations, outreach campaigns, events, and student-engagement activities.
  • Prepare materials, track attendance, assist with scheduling, and perform basic data-entry as assigned.
  • Participate in staff meetings, supervision, training, and professional development.

Position Summary

The Project Access Peer Mentor is an intermediate-level student leadership position within Project Access. The Peer Mentor helps RCC students connect with resources, support, and community by providing trained peer-to-peer support, sharing approved information, and helping students navigate non-academic barriers that may affect their college experience. The role supports peer check-ins, Project Access programming, Rox Box activities, outreach, and warm referrals while maintaining clear boundaries between peer support and professional case management.

Learn & Earn Responsibilities

Provide one-on-one peer support and check-ins through active listening, encouragement, and connection to appropriate resources.

Share accurate information about Project Access services and approved campus and community resources, and make warm referrals to Project Access staff when professional assistance is required.

Assist with day-to-day Rox Box activities, including welcoming students, organizing and stocking supplies, sharing pantry information, and supporting an accessible and respectful student experience.

Conduct classroom visits, tabling, campus outreach, and event participation to promote Project Access, the Rox Box, and other available student resources.

Assist with Project Access workshops, orientations, outreach campaigns, events, and other student-engagement activities.

Support routine program operations by preparing materials, organizing resources, tracking attendance, assisting with scheduling, and completing basic data entry as assigned.

Participate in required staff meetings, supervision, training, and professional development.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications

Currently enrolled RCC student in good standing and eligible for Learn & Earn.

Safety escalation and referral procedures for concerns requiring professional staff intervention.

Any additional Learn & Earn or Project Access training required before independent peer-support activities.

Scope of Practice & Safety

Project Access Peer Mentors provide peer support, active listening, encouragement, general resource information, outreach, and warm referrals. They do not determine eligibility for public benefits, complete benefits applications on behalf of students, provide legal or financial advice, or independently manage student cases. Concerns involving student safety, housing emergencies, food insecurity, interpersonal violence, mental health, or other complex needs must be referred promptly to the appropriate Project Access or College professional staff member.

Student Learning & Professional Development Outcomes

Apply peer-mentoring, active-listening, and professional communication skills within appropriate boundaries.

Navigate RCC and community resources and make appropriate warm referrals.

Support basic-needs programming, Rox Box operations, outreach, workshops, orientations, and student-engagement activities.

Communicate professionally and appropriately handle sensitive student information.

Apply confidentiality, safety, escalation, and professional-boundary practices within the scope of the student role.

Develop administrative, organization, attendance-tracking, scheduling, and basic data-entry skills.

Demonstrate peer leadership, teamwork, reliability, accountability, empathy, and professional judgment.

Supervision & Performance

The Project Access Peer Mentor reports to the Director of Project Access and works under the direction of Project Access staff. The position is authorized through Learn & Earn at $18.00 per hour and may not exceed 18.5 hours per week. The number of placements is to be confirmed. Peer Mentors receive structured training, regular supervision, coaching, and performance feedback and are expected to follow all RCC, Learn & Earn, Project Access, privacy, safety, and professional-boundary requirements.
