Job summary

Roxbury Community College in Boston is seeking two Academic Advising Peer Mentors to support the Academic Advising Center through peer engagement, student navigation, and office operations. You will help students with MyRCC and Navigate360, assist with scheduling, and perform routine advising-office tasks, while upholding confidentiality and fostering a welcoming, student-centered environment.

This role is for currently enrolled RCC students on Federal Work-Study, with up to 18.5 hours per week

Qualifications

Job description

Roxbury Community College (RCC) is a public institution of higher education offering associate degrees, certificate programs and lifelong learning opportunities to the Greater Boston community. Recommended Hours: Weekday, on-campus coverage based on class schedule and department needs; preferred availability between 10:00 a.m. and closing

Maximum Hours: 18.5 hours per week

Position Summary

The Academic Advising Peer Mentor is an intermediate-level student leadership position that supports the Academic Advising Center through peer engagement, student navigation, office operations, and student-success initiatives. Because the role assists peers with MyRCC and Navigate360 navigation, students should enter the position with demonstrated familiarity with RCC systems and the student experience. The role helps create a welcoming, organized, and student-centered environment while strengthening peer mentoring, leadership, technology, administrative, and higher-education skills.

  • Welcome students and provide approved directions for accessing advising services and campus resources.
  • Assist students with basic navigation of MyRCC, Navigate360, appointment scheduling, and other student-facing systems.
  • Support check-in, outreach, workshop materials, and routine advising-office administrative tasks.
  • Provide peer-to-peer reminders about published deadlines and processes using approved information.
  • Maintain routine activity records and protect confidential student information.
  • Do not select courses, interpret degree requirements, approve academic plans, or provide professional academic advising; refer those matters to advisors.
Requirements:
  • Currently enrolled at Roxbury Community College for the 2026-2027 academic year.
  • Have an active Federal Work-Study award and sufficient remaining FWS eligibility before beginning work.
  • Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) in accordance with institutional and financial-aid requirements.
  • Complete all required student-employment and payroll documentation before beginning work.
  • Work only the approved FWS schedule and duties assigned by the designated RCC supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • Current degree- or certificate-seeking RCC student eligible for Federal Work-Study and in good academic standing.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with RCC student systems and processes, including MyRCC and Navigate360, through prior enrollment and student experience.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Reliable, professional, and punctual.
  • Comfortable working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive information.
  • Willingness to learn new technology and office systems.
Additional Information:

Scope of Peer Mentor Role

Academic Advising Peer Mentors do not provide professional academic advising, interpret degree requirements independently, approve course selections, or make academic decisions. Peer Mentors provide basic systems navigation, student engagement, general information, and referrals to professional advisors.

Federal Work-Study Compliance Notes

  • This FWS assignment is part-time, on-campus student employment and is contingent upon continued Federal Work-Study eligibility and available award funding.
  • FWS students may perform only the duties identified for the FWS assignment and approved by the supervisor; Learn & Earn responsibilities are not interchangeable with FWS duties.
  • Students and supervisors are responsible for monitoring scheduled hours so the student does not exceed the approved FWS award or institutional work-hour limits.
  • Timesheets must accurately reflect hours actually worked and be approved by the designated supervisor through the College's approved timekeeping process.

Funding & Scheduling Structure

Two Academic Advising Peer Mentor placements are authorized through Federal Work-Study. Students are assigned to weekday, on-campus coverage in the Academic Advising Center. Schedules are established around academic commitments and departmental needs, with preferred availability between 10:00 a.m. and closing. Students may work no more than 18.5 hours per week.

Supervision & Performance

The Academic Advising Peer Mentor reports to Karissa Diaz, Director of Academic Advising, or designated Advising staff. Students receive training in office procedures, systems navigation, confidentiality, referral boundaries, and student engagement, along with regular supervision and feedback.

Advancement

Strong performers may become candidates for future intermediate peer leadership, student-success, academic-program, or student-services positions when available.
