Maximum Hours: 18.5 hours per week

Reporting Structure: Josh Crary, Assistant Dean of Accessibility, serves as the position supervisor.

Position Summary

The Learning Center Computer Assistant is an intermediate-level student support position serving the Learning Center Student Help Desk. The student assists peers, staff, and faculty with computer-lab navigation, basic technology support, tutor scheduling, Accessibility Services navigation, and front-desk customer service. Because the role helps other students navigate RCC systems and technology, applicants should have prior RCC student experience and demonstrated computer and customer-service skills.

  • Greet students and assist with basic computer-lab check-in and workstation use.
  • Provide routine assistance with logging in, printing, scanning, Microsoft Office, MyRCC, and other approved student-facing technology.
  • Assist students with locating tutoring schedules and approved campus-resource information.
  • Maintain an orderly computer area and report technical or accessibility issues to staff.
  • Track routine lab usage, supplies, and equipment information as assigned.
  • Do not provide academic advising, accessibility determinations, tutoring beyond approved scope, or administrator-level technology support.
Requirements:
  • Currently enrolled at Roxbury Community College for the 2026-2027 academic year.
  • Have an active Federal Work-Study award and sufficient remaining FWS eligibility before beginning work.
  • Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) in accordance with institutional and financial-aid requirements.
  • Complete all required student-employment and payroll documentation before beginning work.
  • Work only the approved FWS schedule and duties assigned by the designated RCC supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2.7 GPA and completion of at least one semester at RCC.
  • Must be in good judicial standing.
  • Experience with computers, customer service, and diverse populations.
  • Comfortable working with students of different learning styles and students with disabilities.
  • Responsible, reliable, and able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Federal Work-Study Compliance Notes

  • This FWS assignment is part-time, on-campus student employment and is contingent upon continued Federal Work-Study eligibility and available award funding.
  • FWS students may perform only the duties identified for the FWS assignment and approved by the supervisor; Learn & Earn responsibilities are not interchangeable with FWS duties.
  • Students and supervisors are responsible for monitoring scheduled hours so the student does not exceed the approved FWS award or institutional work-hour limits.
  • Timesheets must accurately reflect hours actually worked and be approved by the designated supervisor through the College's approved timekeeping process.

  • Gain practical experience with MyRCC, software navigation, printing, and basic technical troubleshooting.
  • Develop tutor-scheduling and student-navigation skills.
  • Strengthen computer literacy instruction, communication, problem-solving, and referral skills.
  • Gain experience supporting diverse learners and working collaboratively with Learning Center and Accessibility Services staff.

Funding & Scheduling Structure

Four Learning Center Computer Assistant placements are authorized through Federal Work-Study. Students are assigned to weekday, on-campus Learning Center coverage and may work no more than 18.5 hours per week.

Supervision & Performance

The Learning Center Computer Assistant is trained and supervised day-to-day by Josh Crary, Assistant Dean of Accessibility. Josh Crary, Assistant Dean of Accessibility, provides additional oversight and monitors/approves timesheets. Students receive training on systems navigation, customer service, confidentiality, accessibility-related role boundaries, and escalation procedures.

Advancement

Strong performers may become candidates for future advanced technology-support, peer-leadership, tutoring, accessibility-support, student-success, or help-desk positions when available.
