Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Central Processing Assistant responsible for blood specimen collection, transport, and processing for laboratory analysis. The role includes performing EKGs, patient registration, and insurance verification for outpatient clients, while ensuring specimen integrity and timely STAT responses.

Responsibilities also include greeting patients, assisting phlebotomy students, and maintaining HIS entries.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Certified phlebotomy course completion required.
• Minimum 120 hours of clinical phlebotomy experience required.

Responsibilities

• Identify patient using two identifiers (name and date of birth).
• Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture with standard equipment.
• Respond to STAT and timed specimen requests promptly.
• Use ROVER for inpatient blood draws.
• Perform EKGs with GE carts and MUSE software.
• Enter patient registration data into HIS and verify insurance for outpatients.
• Explain procedures to patients and obtain cooperation.
• Transport specimens to the laboratory and maintain specimen integrity.
• Adhere to infection control policies.
• Process, label and store specimens for analysis.
• Distribute specimens via pneumatic tube system.
• Provide guidance to Phlebotomy students and new staff.
• Maintain organized work area and handle communications.
