Job summary

Brown University Health is seeking a Patient Service Specialist to join the BHMG physician practice front desk in North Dartmouth, MA. You will greet patients, answer calls, schedule appointments, verify insurance, and handle in‑person and email inquiries with professionalism.

You will document interactions in EPIC, perform insurance eligibility checks, collect co‑pays, handle authorizations/referrals, and protect patient confidentiality while delivering high‑quality customer service.

Qualifications

• 1–3 years as a medical assistant preferred.
• Strong customer service excellence expected.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.
• Experience with EMR strongly preferred. (Athena a plus)
• Experience with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and Outlook preferred.

Responsibilities

• Answers calls and routes telephone calls appropriately; takes messages and follows through.
• Provides a high level of customer service to patients.
• Creates patient cases and documents telephone calls and messages into EPIC.
• Schedules patient appointments and testing as requested.
• Registers patients in EMR and verifies demographics and insurance information.
• Conducts eligibility checks to ensure accurate insurance data.
• Collects insurance co-pays and handles any prior balances.
• Follows scheduling notes and directs schedules in BHMG practices.
• Performs pre-visit planning and runs insurance eligibility.
• Obtains prior authorizations and/or insurance referrals as needed.
• Outreach to patient groups for care and quality initiatives; schedules specialty appointments.
• Performs work in EMR buckets as directed.
• Informs manager of supply needs or assists with ordering.
• Follows up with providers on missing slips and creates claims in EPIC.
• Works on assigned revenue cycle buckets as directed.
• Able to work independently with little supervision.
• Adheres to BHMG policies and patient confidentiality.
• Performs other duties as requested.
