Job summary

Emerus invites applications for a Patient Access Specialist to act as a liaison between patients, payers and health care teams. You will verify demographic data, secure out-of-pocket payments, and maximize hospital reimbursement as part of the revenue cycle.

The role requires compliance with EMTALA, HIPAA, and related regulations, plus strong customer service and data-entry skills. English proficiency is essential; bilingual English/Spanish is advantageous in certain markets.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED is required.
• 2 years of patient registration and insurance verification experience in a health care setting is preferred.
• Emergency Department registration experience is strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of various insurance plans (HMO, PPO, POS, Medicare, Medicaid) and payors is required.
• Fluency in English; written and oral communication is essential; bilingual English & Spanish is helpful for certain markets.

Responsibilities

• Maintain compliance with EMTALA, DNV, HIPAA and all hospital and government regulations applicable to Admissions and Medical Records.
• Provide excellent customer service and build quality relationships with patients and families.
• Identify and triage patients on arrival to support patient safety and accurate processing.
• Answer phones professionally, record messages, and communicate with medical staff.
• Obtain signatures on required forms and consents; verify and enter demographic information.
• Verify insurance benefits and confirm correct payor and plan in the patient accounting system.
• Obtain insurance authorizations where applicable.
• Assist with collections to maximize reimbursement at the time of service.
• Scan and maintain medical records; coordinate transfers as needed.
• Respond to medical record requests from patients, physicians, and hospitals.
• Maintain cash drawer and log payments, transfers, and admissions.
