Job summary

VCU Health in Richmond, VA seeks a Patient Access Representative to deliver outstanding customer service to patients, families, visitors, and staff. You will perform reception, scheduling, and registration for appointments and procedures, collect co-pays, verify insurance, and support financial counseling.

You will manage referrals, ensure accurate data entry in registration and billing systems, coordinate pre-operative testing, maintain patient records, and handle document scanning.

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Associates or Bachelors in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or Healthcare Administration preferred.
• Experience using computers, Microsoft Office applications and web-based platforms.
• Experience with medical insurance, HMO, managed care, electronic medical billing/registration systems and appointment scheduling.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Able to work with minimal supervision; self-directed.
• May require off-shifts, weekends or holidays depending on assignment.

Responsibilities

• Greet patients and answer telephone with courteous, professional service.
• Collect co-payments and verify/update registration data; manage cash per policy.
• Verify insurance coverage; obtain referrals/authorizations; explain payment expectations.
• Schedule appointments, transcribe orders, and coordinate pre-operative testing as needed.
• Maintain patient records and verify arrival in scheduling system; document no-shows or cancellations.
• Obtain and scan patient medical documentation.
• Notify supervisor of policy violations; perform other duties or special projects.
• Prepare cost estimates and provide pre-payment guidance.
