Job summary

Atrium Health is looking for a detail‑oriented Patient Access Specialist to greet patients, register walk‑ins, verify demographics and insurance, and help with financial clearance.

You will support outpatient scheduling, collect balances, apply pre‑authorization rules, and collaborate with Financial Counselors to assist patients with financial aid, while maintaining HIPAA compliance and high accuracy.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Experience in patient access, scheduling, registration or billing is preferred.
• Knowledge of Medicare, HIPAA, and EMTALA rules is helpful.

Responsibilities

• Greets patients and manages flow to ensure courteous, efficient service.
• Verifies demographics and insurance information for accuracy.
• Registers walk-in patients and updates demographic/insurance changes.
• Verifies benefits and collects patient financial liability; handles balances.
• Follows financial clearance policy for non-urgent services when needed.
• Identifies financial assistance needs and refers to Financial Counselor.
• Performs visit closure and schedules follow-up appointments.
• Maintains knowledge of payer requirements and accepted plans.
• Communicates issues to management and supports process improvements.
• Meets productivity and accuracy targets; collaborates with staff.
