Job summary

Atrium Health is seeking a Patient Access / Registration Specialist to greet patients, verify demographics, and complete registrations for walk-ins and appointments. You will collect balances, determine financial responsibility, and refer complex cases to Financial Counseling.

The role requires knowledge of Medicare/Medicaid and payer rules, strong communication, and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced hospital setting.

Qualifications

• Ability to identify and understand issues and problems; analyze data and draw conclusions.
• Ability to explain Medicare, HIPAA, EMTALA rules and stay updated on pre-certification requirements.
• Mathematical aptitude and strong oral and written communication skills.
• Understanding of basic anatomy, medical terminology and related processes.
• Clear, professional communication with customers; courteous telephone demeanor.
• Ability to handle sensitive information per internal policies and HIPAA rules.
• Ability to read and interpret safety rules and operating instructions; follow procedures.
• Experience with Outlook, Word, Excel and ADT software; basic data entry.
• Ability to write routine correspondence and calculate discounts or percentages.
• Capable of working with minimal supervision and solving problems in high-stress areas.

Responsibilities

• Greets patients arriving for appointments and manages flow for efficient service.
• Verifies and updates patient demographic and insurance information as needed.
• Completes registration for walk-ins and checks out patients with follow-up scheduling.
• Collects and calculates patient financial liability; references insurance and pre-cert requirements.
• Follows Financial Clearance policy when authorization is pending or not obtained.
• Directs patients to Financial Counselor for assistance as needed.
• Maintains knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, payer requirements and accepted plans.
• Communicates issues to management to improve customer service and processes.
• Meets productivity targets and accuracy rates in the department.
• Maintains positive relations with patients, families, and staff for timely information flow.
