Job summary

Carroll County, Inc. is seeking a Shelter Support Staff member to provide overnight, compassionate support to individuals and families experiencing homelessness. You will help participants take steps toward stability and self‑sufficiency within a safe shelter environment.

This role requires strong communication, de‑escalation abilities, and basic computer skills, with a focus on trauma‑informed care and careful documentation in HMIS. Valid driver’s license and proof of insurance are required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to de‑escalate challenging situations.
• Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office).
• Comfort working with individuals facing barriers such as mental illness, substance use, trauma, or criminal history.

Responsibilities

• Provide overnight coverage to ensure a safe environment for shelter participants.
• Use motivational interviewing and trauma‑informed care to assist participants in following shelter guidelines and achieving goals.
• Conduct hourly safety checks and monitor security; respond to crises as needed.
• Complete shift reports and maintain records in HMIS; communicate with the next shift.
