Job summary

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) seeks a capable laboratory assistant to support infectious disease research projects in a busy lab. You will design and perform experiments, document procedures, and help maintain equipment, supplies, and safety standards.

The role emphasizes careful data recording, collaboration with PI and students, and ensuring clean, organized lab operations in a day shift.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in the sciences or four years of related work experience.
  • Experience with laboratory techniques and instrumentation is preferred.
  • Experience may substitute for college education on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, and conduct laboratory experiments and assist with analysis of data.
  • Maintain records including experiments, protocols, equipment, inventory and purchasing.
  • Support operations by keeping facilities and equipment clean and functional.
  • Coordinate procurement, inventory, and distribution of supplies with PI approval.
  • Safeguard research materials and address equipment issues and disruptions.
  • Provide guidance to research personnel and students as assigned.

Visa Information

Position Description

Employees in this classification provide support in an assignedresearch laboratory conducting specified phases of researchprojects on the range of fundamental questions on transmission ofinfectious disease and the establishment of reproductive isolationduring species divergence. They will perform work independently andare responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to beutilized in the laboratory and in experiments, and new applicationsfor standard procedures and techniques. Work is performed underusual laboratory conditions. Some hazards may be present due to useof radioactive, carcinogenic or other potentially harmfulsubstances. Responsibilities also include ensuring overallcleanliness of the laboratory and laboratory equipment, andordering and maintaining an adequate stock of necessary supplies.May instruct or direct work of subordinate laboratorypersonnel.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Plan, design, and conduct laboratory experiments and assistwith the analysis and interpretation of research data.
  • Maintain laboratory records, including documentation ofexperiments, protocols, equipment, inventory, and purchasingactivities.
  • Support laboratory operations by maintaining the cleanliness,organization, and functionality of facilities and equipment.
  • Coordinate the procurement, inventory, and distribution oflaboratory supplies and consumables with PI approval.
  • Safeguard research materials and collaborate with appropriatepersonnel to address equipment issues and laboratorydisruptions.
  • Provide guidance and support to research personnel and studentswhile assisting with other research-related activities asassigned.
Occasional Duties
  • Filing lab-related paperwork.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in one of the sciences, or equivalent combination(four (4) years) of job-related experience and college education.Experience may be substituted for college education on a year foryear basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience and in laboratory techniques such as handling andprocessing animal tissues and working with advancedinstrumentation.
  • B.A. or B.S. in Biology, Biochemistry, or Chemistry.
  • Experience with molecular biology and protein biochemistrymethods.
