  • Supervise lab support activities and assist student assistants when needed.

Position Description

Employees in this classification provide support in an assignedresearch laboratory performing laboratory experiments andprocedures. Assists with the development of new procedures andtechniques to be utilized within the laboratory. Performs otherfunctional duties such as maintenance of the laboratory andlaboratory equipment and supplies. Work is performed under usuallaboratory conditions. Some hazards maybe present due to use ofratioctive, cacinogenic or other potientally harmful substances.Assists in training and direction of subordinate personnel.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Responsible for maintaining inventories of commonly usedsupplies.
  • Assist P.I. in establishing the budget and monitoringspending.
  • Help P.I, students, and other technical personnel in trainingnew students, postdocs and other investigators in variousscientific procedures; preparation of talks, grants andpublications.
  • Manage and maintain a breeding colony of genetically alteredmice, including genotyping and records.
  • Conduct daily animal inventory.
  • Design & execute experiments (Western blot analysis,recombinant protein expression, immunofluorescence analysis, cellculture).
  • Perform rat injections, tattooing, handling, breeding anddissection.
  • Maintain a record of experiments in a laboratory notebook,including detailed methodology, calculations, data graphs, imagesof protein blots (“Westerns”), interpretations of data, andindications of errors or unexpected outcomes.
  • Supervise lab support activities such as dishwashing, ordering,cleaning, autoclaving solutions and stuffing pipette tip boxes bystudent assistants and provide these services when studentassistants are absent.
  • Help maintain essential laboratory equipment (check -80 and -20freezer temperatures) and record (animal use and breeding colonyrecords, material safety data sheets, biohazardous materials,invoices from orders).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, animal science, engineering, orrelated fields.
  • Experience with conducting research in a biological field.
  • Experience with tools and techniques in molecular biology,including pipetting, performing assays, Western blotting, andpolymerase chain reaction (PCR).
  • Experience in handling small animals (mice).
  • Experience with operations on a Macintosh or Windowscomputer.
  • Experience with an online purchasing system to order equipment,reagents, and supplies.
  • Experience and/or knowledge with molecular biology andbiochemistry.
