Job summary

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) is seeking a laboratory assistant to support research in an active lab environment. The role includes maintaining procedures, recording data, and assisting with animal care and cell culture tasks.

The position emphasizes collaboration with PIs, postdocs, and students to advance ongoing projects and ensure compliance with safety and biohazard protocols. The successful candidate will hold a BS in a science field (or equivalent experience) and

• Bachelor's degree in sciences or 4 years of related experience.
• Experience with mice models preferred.
• Experience with molecular techniques preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist PI in maintaining a supportive lab environment.
• Record procedures and data in the lab notebook.
• Maintain laboratory records (expenditures, budget, equipment, manuals, etc.).
• Conduct and supervise laboratory support activities (ordering supplies, preparing solutions, sterilizing).
• Assist P.I., postdocs, and students in training and tasks.
• Design, execute, and train on animal care procedures (handling, administration, sampling).
• Maintain animal xenograft experiments and daily animal rounds; may include some weekends.
• Assist P.I. with hiring/evaluations of assistants.
• Support TTUHSC Service Plus philosophy.
• Establish and maintain primary cell lines from patient samples.

Position Description

Employees in this classification provide support in an assignedresearch laboratory conducting specified phases of researchprojects. Performs work independently and is responsible fordeveloping new procedures and techniques to be utilized in thelaboratory and in experiments, and new applications for standardprocedures and techniques. Work is performed under usual laboratoryconditions. Some hazards may be present due to use of radioactive,carcinogenic or other potentially harmful substances.Responsibilities also include ensuring overall cleanliness of thelaboratory and laboratory equipment, and ordering and maintainingan adequate stock of necessary supplies. May instruct or directwork of subordinate laboratory personnel.

Major/Essential Functions

• Assist P.I. in maintaining a supportive and collegial workingenvironment that fosters the exchange of ideas and enhancesscientific progress.
• Recording procedures and data in the laboratory notebook.
• Establish and maintain laboratory records (Expenditures,budget, equipment, manuals, and records, animal use records,reagents and experimental protocols, material safety data sheets,databases, biohazardous materials).
• Conduct and/or supervise laboratory support activities(ordering supplies, preparing solutions, washing and sterilizingsurgical instruments, etc.).
• Assist P.I., postdocs, and students in miscellaneous tasks(Training new students/employees in experimental procedures,library work, preparation of talks, publications and grants).
• Design, execution, and training of new students/employees inanimal care (safe & humane handling and restraint of animals;substance administration to include intramuscular, intraperitoneal,subcutaneous, and intravenous, as well as gavage; collection ofblood samples, sedation, anesthesia, and analgesia; methods ofeuthanasia).
• Maintain animal xenograft experiments and daily animal rounds.To potentially include some weekends.
• Assist P.I. with hiring/ firing/ evaluations ofassistants.
• Supports the Service Plus philosophy of Texas Tech.
• Establish and maintain primary cell lines from patient samples;Continue and maintain established cell lines for postdocs andgraduate students.
• Process new primary patient samples to include blood, bonemarrow, tumor and fluid models. To potentially include someweekends.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in one of the sciences, or equivalent combination(four (4) years) of job-related experience and college education.Experience may be substituted for college education on a year foryear basis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with mice models.
• Experience working with Molecular techniques.
