Job summary

VEIT in Minnesota is seeking a Civil Construction Intern to support project management and estimating. This internship covers Earthwork, Utilities, Demolition and Foundations, with mentoring from a PM/Estimator to develop responsibilities and a potential full-time opportunity after the program.

You will review plans, perform takeoffs, solicit quotes, and help build bids while learning DBE/MBE considerations; typical 8–10 hour days and a strong benefits package.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field.
• At least 1 summer of construction work experience preferred.
• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to communicate effectively with peers and supervisor.
• Ability to read, comprehend and act on simple instructions.
• Ability to respond to shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment with a can-do attitude.

Responsibilities

• Reviews plans and specifications to determine the scope of the work required for the project.
• Reviews jobsites before bidding to make appropriate estimates.
• Completes accurate takeoffs utilizing software. Also performs hand takeoff quantities for various aspects of each project.
• Calculates quantities for materials needed and movement.
• Solicits quotes from subcontractors for bid preparation and considers DBE/MBE requirements.
• Constructs bids by adding activities, crews and equipment, adjusting production rates.
• Prints out bid proposals and create proposal; reviews bid with estimator or project manager.
• Observes the change order process.
• Attends project meetings.
