Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Lead Substation Engineer in a hybrid role. You will apply protective relaying and controls knowledge to HV and EHV substations, directing design efforts, mentoring engineers, and coordinating with clients and suppliers.

You will develop relay philosophies, SCADA/telecom configurations, and I/O assignments, while guiding teams through detailed design phases and ensuring timely deliverables across multiple projects.

Qualifications

• This position requires a Bachelor of Science Engineering degree.
• 12+ years experience designing substations at 138kV and above.
• PE license.
• Experience with firm/client liaison in a lead engineering role.
• Experience with relay calculations documentation.
• Proficiency with design tools and standards (NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, ANSI).

Responsibilities

• Lead substation projects, including modifications and upgrades with calculations and specifications.
• Prepare relaying philosophies and configuration concepts for relay, control, and communications.
• Guide junior and senior engineers and designers in protection and controls design.
• Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve engineering issues.
• Design single line diagrams, relaying and metering diagrams (AC/DC).
• Prepare engineering studies for client and peer review.
• Perform independent reviews of others' work including calculations and drawings.
• Coordinate with engineers, project managers, client personnel, and suppliers.
• Review existing facilities to propose upgrades and present findings.
• Mentor less experienced engineers and share knowledge through Communities of Practice.
• Travel to client/vendor sites for reviews and field verification as needed.
