Job summary

Humana Inc. is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to architect and deliver real-time decisioning services for the NBA platform. You will own the State Machine and Transactional Outbox while mentoring engineers and delivering scalable, observable production systems.

The role combines hands-on coding with technical leadership across Java, Python, Node.js, and TypeScript in a regulated healthcare environment. Hybrid in-office work is expected, with multiple U.S. locations and travel as needed.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field.
8+ years of full stack software engineering with leadership experience in platform reliability or production operations.
Strong experience with Java, Python, Node.js, or TypeScript.
Hands-on experience designing automated testing frameworks and quality automation.
Strong observability practices including logging, metrics, tracing, monitoring, and alerting.
Experience designing reliability patterns for distributed systems (fault tolerance, retries, resilience).
Ability to lead a pod, manage contractors, and contribute as an IC.
Experience operating cloud-native apps on Kubernetes and container platforms.
Clear communication of risks, tradeoffs, and engineering decisions to leadership.
Experience with AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity.

Responsibilities

Pod delivery ownership for platform scale and reliability.
Own uptime, performance, resilience, and operational excellence across services.
Build and maintain automated testing frameworks across unit, integration, end-to-end, and performance testing.
Contribute production code and build reliability tooling and observability capabilities.
Own logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, and monitoring strategies for visibility.
Define patterns for exception handling, fault tolerance, and failure recovery.
Lead scalability initiatives to improve performance and cost efficiency.
Ensure production readiness and quality gates before release ownership.
Mentor engineers and contractors and uphold engineering standards.
Collaborate with decisioning, orchestration, activation, platform, and data teams.
