Job summary

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a Lead Physical Engineer to join our Renewables Substation team in Houston, TX.

You will lead substation physical engineering and design efforts for large-scale renewable energy projects and mentor a design team of 3–5 engineers and designers. You will collaborate with project engineers and discipline leads to ensure coordinated, code-compliant design documents, oversee studies, and drive technical excellence across grounding, protection, and

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering required.
• 7–9 years of experience in substation design and engineering.
• Strong understanding of substation layouts, grounding, lightning, illumination, and clearances.
• PE License required.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Familiarity with industry standards and codes.

Responsibilities

• Lead a Physical design team of three to five engineers and/or designers.
• Coordinate with the Substation Project Engineer and other discipline leads to ensure design documents are consistent.
• Develop and review engineering calculations, drawings, and reports.
• Oversee design documentation for major primary equipment (transformers, breakers, switches).
• Mentor junior engineers and provide performance feedback.
• Ensure compliance with NESC, IEEE, and local utility requirements.
• Manage project timelines and resource allocation across multiple projects.
• Collaborate with procurement and vendor drawing reviews.
