Job summary

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. in Westminster, Colorado, is seeking a Lead Physical Engineer to head the substation physical design for large-scale renewable projects.

You will mentor a 3-5 person team and coordinate with disciplines to deliver robust, code-compliant layouts. This senior role requires a PE license, a strong electrical background, and hands-on design experience with major substation equipment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited program.
• 7–9 years of substation design and engineering experience.
• Strong understanding of electrical systems, grounding, and clearances.
• PE Licensure.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Familiarity with ANSI, IEEE, NEC, NESC, NERC standards.
• Knowledge of substations and major equipment.
• Ability to assess mechanical and thermal effects of fault currents on rigid bus.
• Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, and engineering software.

Responsibilities

• Design leadership for 35kV to 500kV substations, focusing on grounding and layouts.
• Lead a team of 3–5 engineers/designers with mentoring.
• Coordinate designs with other disciplines and vendors.
• Prepare calculations, drawings, specifications, and BOMs.
• Ensure compliance with NESC, IEEE, and local utilities.
• Interact with clients and present design concepts.
• Travel up to 10% to project sites.
