Job summary

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a Lead Physical Engineer to lead substation physical engineering and design for large-scale renewables projects. You will mentor a small design team and coordinate with multiple disciplines to deliver compliant, reliable layouts.

The role demands a PE license, 7–9 years in substation design, strong communication, and hands-on experience with major equipment and standards. Office-based with occasional travel.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering required.
• Minimum of 7-9 years of work experience in substation design and engineering.
• PE License required; strong communications skills and problem-solving abilities.
• Familiarity with ANSI, IEEE, NEC, NESC, NERC standards and substation equipment specs.
• Ability to assess mechanical forces and thermal effects of high fault currents on rigid bus.
• Experience with major substation equipment (transformers, breakers, switches, bus work, etc.).

Responsibilities

• Design leadership for 35kV to 500kV substation layouts ensuring grounding, structure, and equipment placement.
• Coordinate with P&C and Civil/Structural teams for integrated design.
• Mentor a three-to-five member design team and manage performance reviews.
• Prepare calculations, drawings, specifications, and BOMs for primary equipment.
• Ensure designs meet applicable codes and standards; support QA and cross-discipline checks.
• Lead project management across multiple projects; manage timelines and resources.
• Interact with clients and stakeholders; communicate design concepts and updates.
• Stay current with industry trends and pursue continuous improvement.
• Travel up to 10% as required.
