Job summary

GFT in Schaumburg, IL seeks a Rail Design Engineer to join our Transportation Team. The hybrid role requires regular office attendance in Schaumburg and offers opportunities to work on intermodal, transit, and industrial rail projects across North America.

The successful candidate will prepare construction documents, develop track geometry and layouts, and coordinate with civil, structural, and signal teams while ensuring AREMA compliance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
• EIT certification or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
• Familiarity with MicroStation, OpenRoads or OpenRail.
• Ability to read plans and shop drawings; evaluate contractor compliance.
• Ability to work with public agencies, railroads, and private developers.

Responsibilities

• Prepares construction documents using MicroStation/OpenRail.
• Develops track geometry, site/facility layout, and utility layouts.
• Works in a team environment; shares knowledge.
• Collaborates with civil, structural, and signal teams to integrate rail projects.
• Supports permitting and AREMA standards compliance.
• Receives instructions from Project Manager and reports status.
• Ensures accuracy of design, quality presentation, and thoroughness.
• Analyzes information for routine design tasks; researches design options.
