Job summary

Consumers Energy is hiring a Billing Exception Specialist to investigate and resolve account discrepancies, focusing on residential and small commercial rates. The role requires attention to regulatory compliance and accuracy in billing processes.

You will analyze billing and meter data, communicate with customers, and collaborate with field teams. A high school diploma with 2+ years in billing is required; experience in the energy sector is preferred. Hybrid work with some onsite days.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma with 2+ years of experience interpreting complex billing data and identifying discrepancies.
• Experience with utility billing processes, metering principles, and regulatory requirements.
• Experience with billing systems and software, preferably in energy/utility.
• Experience working independently and in fast-paced environments with accuracy and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Analyze billing, meter, and rate data to identify root causes of account issues and complete related work orders.
• Communicate billing discrepancies to customers with clear explanations and resolutions.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards for billing accuracy.
• Identify opportunities to improve processes and system enhancements in billing operations.
• Proactively identify potential billing exceptions and take preventive measures; scripting/automation in processes is preferred.
• Handle billing for multiple renewable programs, including Net Metering and Distributed Generation.
• Other duties as assigned.
