Job summary

City Year AmeriCorps members support students by coaching and mentoring across elementary to high school levels, helping improve academic success and attendance. Training is provided at the start, and staff collaborate with teachers to implement in-class and after-school programs.

You will engage with students 1:1 and in groups, develop literacy and math skills, and help maintain a positive classroom environment while participating in school-wide initiatives and community programs.

Qualifications

• Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident (Authorization to work in the U.S. is not sufficient. Those with DACA status unfortunately are not eligible at this time)
• Be 17-25 by July 1, 2025
• Have a GED or high school diploma, some college experience, or college degree
• Have served no more than three terms in an AmeriCorps state or national program
• Agree to and complete a background check
• Be able to begin City Year by July/August 2025 (specific start date varies by location)

Responsibilities

• Coach and mentor elementary, middle and/or high school students to earn academic success and improve attendance
• Plan and monitor individual student progress and work with teachers on in-class student assistance
• Support academic coaching and interpersonal development for students with 1:1 and small-group sessions
• Develop literacy and/or math skills through varied activities and encourage assignment completion
• Create a safe, engaging classroom space in collaboration with teachers
• Support and/or conduct extended day and virtual programming before, during and after school
