Job summary

The City of Austin is seeking a Drainage Operations and Maintenance II to perform skilled construction and maintenance work in stormwater and erosion control projects. You will operate heavy equipment, perform preventive maintenance, and assist with emergencies while coordinating with crew leads and supervisors.

The role requires a valid CDL, knowledge of TMUTCD, ability to read blueprints, and strong communication with city staff and the public. 40-hour work week with potential on‑call shifts.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus two (2) years experience in maintenance and/or construction, including 6 months experience in operation of heavy duty equipment.
• One (1) year of additional related experience may substitute for one (1) year of high school, up to a maximum of four (4) years.
• Experience operating heavy equipment is preferred.
• Knowledge of confined space entry is preferred.
• Experience in pre-trip and post-trip inspections of equipment and heavy equipment.
• Experience with Texas Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD).
• Experience in trash cleanup or debris removal from creeks and wet environments.

Responsibilities

• Operate a minimum of one specialized type of heavy equipment per the Equipment Training Program.
• Drive trucks and trailer rigs to haul equipment and materials, including concrete mix trucks and tandem dumps.
• Perform preventive equipment maintenance and repairs to ensure proper operating conditions.
• Perform work in storm water management facilities and erosion control projects.
• Perform traffic control at job sites and set up forms, guard rails, and signs.
• Build concrete forms, pour and finish concrete, and place asphalt mix as needed.
• Oversee landscape maintenance, including trimming, mowing, seeding, and erosion control.
• Prepare daily documentation, JHA, and other required forms; participate in on‑the‑job training.
• Assist with emergencies such as floods and severe weather; may train others.
