Job summary

Thompson Machinery is seeking a General Mechanic/Service Shop Technician to set up, repair, service and diagnose Caterpillar diesel powered construction equipment. You will work largely independently, with mentorship, in company service shops serving local customers.

Requirements include diesel equipment experience, a high school diploma or equivalent and a full set of basic hand tools. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are essential for success.

Qualifications

• Diesel/engine or equipment training from an accredited school or related military experience.
• 2+ years of hands-on diesel equipment/engine experience.
• Five-day schedule with overtime and occasional weekends.
• Own a complete set of basic mechanical hand tools (drives, sockets, wrenches).
• Professionalism, integrity, adaptability and customer service orientation.
• Urgency, self-initiative and drive to succeed.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Technical knowledge of construction equipment and/or engine failures.
• Analytical problem solving skills.
• Valid state driver’s license; CDL may be required.

Responsibilities

• Set up, repair, service, diagnostics, preventive maintenance and install parts on Caterpillar diesel equipment.
• Work largely independently or with guidance from service mentors in customer service shops.
• Read and interpret manuals, service and safety manuals, company policies.
• Use test equipment and ensure high quality repair and maximum value for work performed.
