Job summary

Thompson Machinery is seeking a Field Service Technician to perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on Caterpillar diesel-powered construction equipment. You will work largely independently from a company-provided field service truck at customer sites and service shops across the region.

The role requires a high school diploma and 5+ years of equipment diagnostics experience; training opportunities and career growth are available within Thompson Machinery.

Qualifications

• High school diploma is required.
• Five or more years of experience with equipment diagnostics and advanced troubleshooting.
• Field Service Technician training or equivalent through accredited schools or manufacturer training preferred.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret technical instructions, safety manuals, service manuals, company policies and procedures.
• Works with electric/electronic and hydraulic system schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment service manuals, and should be proficient in the use of test equipment.
• Provide advanced troubleshooting and high-quality repair service on construction equipment, engines, and power trains to respond to customer needs in a positive, safe, and timely manner, and ensuring maximum value.
• Field Service Technicians identify, troubleshoot, diagnose, and provide quality repairs of Caterpillar equipment and related engine mechanical systems; communicate with customers to provide exceptional service.
• Able to travel in an assigned region, and work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays, sometimes with short notice; overnight travel may be required (up to 25%).
• Possess and maintain a current, valid state driver’s license with a DOT medical card as required for operating service trucks and towing.
• Must have a basic set of industrial tools, including hand tools, air tools, torque wrenches, and multimeters.
• Able to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends and on‑call hours; work independently in remote locations.
• May work in environments with hazards present.
• Requires frequent hand use for typing, operating the phone, handling materials.
• Other duties as assigned.
