Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist (Biochemistry)
The Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist plays a key role in managing a team or section within the laboratory, with a particular focus on biochemistry. This role involves overseeing the total testing process (pre‑analytical, analytical, and post‑analytical), supporting laboratory management in implementing organisational and departmental policies, and ensuring high standards of quality and service delivery. The position requires expertise in supervision, external quality assurance (EQA) reporting and investigation, evaluation of laboratory processes, and experience in introducing new biochemical tests.
Manage and supervise the biochemistry team’s daily activities, ensuring specimens are prioritised based on clinical urgency. Make decisions on specimen suitability and handle problematic samples effectively. Provide direct supervision and competency assessment for medical laboratory technologists and medical officers involved in biochemistry testing.
Oversee the participation in EQA programmes for biochemistry assays. Ensure timely and accurate reporting of EQA results, investigate any discrepancies or failures, and implement corrective and preventive actions to maintain high‑quality standards.
Lead the evaluation and validation of new biochemical tests and methodologies. Coordinate the introduction of new tests into the laboratory workflow, including protocol development, staff training, and quality control measures to ensure smooth implementation and compliance with regulatory standards.
Oversee calibration, quality control, and validation of biochemistry analysers and related laboratory equipment. Ensure preventive maintenance is performed and troubleshoot technical issues promptly to minimise downtime.
Manage day‑to‑day operations of the laboratory team, optimising workflow to meet performance indicators. Ensure compliance with laboratory policies, work instructions, and guidelines; collaborate with management on disciplinary matters when necessary. Report and investigate laboratory incidents, implementing corrective and preventive actions. Maintain proficiency in laboratory information systems, equipment software, and other relevant software tools. Oversee testing of specimens from quality assurance programme surveys. Write and review laboratory documentation, including policies, work instructions, bench guides, and forms. Perform specimen reception, order entry, and other assigned laboratory duties. Identify and troubleshoot major operational issues, escalating to Laboratory Manager or Head of Department as needed.
