Job description

Job Summary:

The Material Purchaser is responsible for sourcing and procuring aluminium materials and consumables used in aluminium vessel construction, with specific responsibility for supporting CNC cutting operations. This includes managing the supply of marine-grade aluminium plates, profiles, and associated materials, ensuring compatibility with CNC nesting plans and cutting schedules. The role supports efficient production by maintaining strong supplier relationships, tracking inventory levels, and ensuring quality and timely delivery of materials aligned with shipbuilding project timelines.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Source and procure marine-grade aluminium materials (e.g., 5083, 6061, 6082 alloys) used for hull and superstructure fabrication.
  • Maintain optimal stock levels of aluminium plates, flat bars, extrusions, and other CNC-cuttable materials to avoid downtime.
  • Liaise with engineering and production teams to verify material specifications and quantities required for CNC operations.
  • Work with external CNC cutting vendors (if outsourced) or ensure timely delivery to in-house CNC machines.
  • Review and interpret BOMs, technical drawings, and nesting plans to plan material purchases accurately and reduce waste.
  • Negotiate with vendors for pricing, delivery schedules, and favourable payment terms.
  • Source and evaluate suppliers for marine-grade materials such as:
  1. Aluminium plates and profiles
  2. Piping and valves
  3. Welding consumables
  4. Coatings and insulation
  5. Fasteners and fittings
  • Issue and manage purchase orders, delivery tracking, and supplier invoicing.
  • Ensure compliance with marine classification society requirements (e.g., ABS, BV) for all raw materials.
  • Monitor supplier performance, quality assurance, and resolve any supply chain or delivery issues.
