Role Overview

A Marine Superintendent is a senior shore-based maritime professional responsible for ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of vessels under the company’s care. This role acts as a key liaison between the vessel (Master and officers), the ship management office, external regulators (flag/port state), classification societies, oil majors, and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
Operational & Compliance Oversight
  • Monitor assigned vessels for compliance with international maritime regulations, flag state and port state requirements, and company policies (e.g., ISM, ISPS, MLC).
  • Plan, coordinate, and follow up on class surveys, external audits, internal audits, and periodic statutory inspections; ensure closing of non-conformities through electronic reporting systems.
  • Oversee vessel operational performance including navigation, cargo operations, mooring, ballast management, and safety procedures, and guide shipboard teams in best practices.
  • Prepare and support vessels for vetting inspections by oil majors and ensure compliance with major industry standards.
Inspection and Reporting
  • Conduct or coordinate vessel inspections, navigational audits, and ship visits according to company policy and regulatory requirements, and report findings with actionable recommendations.
  • Review shipboard reports, incident investigations, and safety records to ensure accurate documentation and follow-up.
  • Provide written inspection and compliance reports to senior management.
Safety, HSE & Audit Support
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the company’s Health, Safety, Environmental Management System (HSEMS) during vessel inspections and ensure proper implementation.
  • Assist in preparation for third-party inspections, audits and vettings, and ensure timely closure of findings.
Crew & Training
  • Vet and interview senior deck officers for recruitment; conduct pre-joining briefings and support professional development.
  • Handle crew disciplinary matters, and assist with P&I claims or crew medical issues in coordination with relevant departments.
Stakeholder Coordination
  • Liaise with Masters, Chief Engineers, Charterers, Owners, and external bodies on operational matters and regulatory updates.
  • Provide navigational information and guidance to vessel Masters as required.
Contingency & Emergency Response
  • Participate as a member of the company’s Emergency Response Team, and support surveys, dry-dockings, and other planned maintenance activities.
Qualifications & Requirements
Professional Certifications
  • Master Mariner with an unlimited Class 1 Certificate of Competence (CoC) — mandatory.
  • Oil & chemical tanker experience at sea, especially as Master.
  • Experience with Oil Major Vetting and vessel inspections preferred.
Technical & Compliance Skills
  • Strong knowledge of international and national maritime regulations (e.g., IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM, ISPS).
  • Familiar with electronic safety document systems and audit reporting tools.
Soft Skills & Work Style
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and travel or sail short voyages to evaluate issues and provide support.
  • Computer literacy (e.g., MS applications) and proactive problem-solving mindset.
Additional Advantages
