Key Qualities and Requirements
- Education and Qualifications : A diploma or a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is typically required who knows Sprinkler Works.
- Regulatory Knowledge : Engineers must have strong, up-to-date knowledge of Singapore's fire codes, standards, and regulations, as well as international standards such as those from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
- Practical Experience : Relevant working experience in fire protection or mechanical and electrical (M&E) projects is necessary, with senior staff often possessing over a decade of industry experience. This includes hands‑on experience in system testing and commissioning, such as hydrostatic pressure and flow testing.
- Professional Registration : To practice as a Fire Safety Engineer (FSE) in a capacity requiring regulatory approval (e.g., performance‑based designs), an engineer must be a registered Qualified Person (QP) with the SCDF and a licensed corporation under the PE Board.
- Project Management Skills : Engineers should possess excellent coordination, problem‑solving, and communication skills to manage projects from concept to commissioning, liaising with clients, consultants, contractors, and authorities.
- Commitment to Safety and Quality : Adherence to quality assurance systems (such as ISO 9001) and workplace safety procedures (such as bizSAFE certifications) is a standard requirement in the industry.
Technical Expertise : Proficiency in various aspects of fire protection systems is essential : System design, installation, and maintenance.
Hydraulic calculations and technical drawing preparation.
Knowledge of specific equipment like fire pumps, valves, piping, and related components.
Experience with design software such as AutoCAD and Revit / BIM is an advantage. Candidates should also be able to prepare and submit quotations, handle progress claims, and negotiate effectively with clients.
