Job Summary
The Deputy Tunnel Manager supports the Tunnel Manager in the planning, execution, and management of tunnelling works to ensure safe, efficient, and timely project delivery. The role involves overseeing daily site operations, coordinating engineering and construction activities, and ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and contract requirements.
Essential Job Functions
Tender Stage
- Support preparation of technical proposals and construction methodologies for tunnelling works.
- Assist in cost estimation, risk assessment, and construction planning during tender stage.
- Contribute to value engineering, alternative construction methods, and programme optimization.
- Coordinate with design, planning, and QS teams to align technical and commercial inputs.
- Review tender drawings, specifications, and contract requirements related to tunnelling.
Construction Stage
- Assist the Tunnel Manager in managing all tunnelling activities, including TBM or NATM works, shaft construction, and associated underground structures.
- Oversee daily tunnel construction operations, ensuring works are carried out safely and according to approved methods.
- Coordinate with engineering, planning, safety, and QA/QC teams to ensure compliance with project requirements.
- Monitor construction progress, productivity, and resource utilization against the programme.
- Support risk management, method statement preparation, and implementation of mitigation measures.
- Liaise with client, consultant, and relevant authorities on tunnelling-related matters.
- Manage subcontractors and specialist contractors, including performance, safety, and quality.
- Assist in resolving technical and construction issues arising during tunnelling works.
- Ensure proper documentation, reporting, and record-keeping of tunnelling activities.
- Any ad-hoc tasks assigned by the superior.
Minimum Qualifications/Job Experience
- Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
- Minimum 8–12 years of experience in tunnelling or underground works, with tender involvement preferred.
- Strong understanding of tunnelling methods, construction planning, and risk management.
- Experience in MRT or major infrastructure projects is an advantage.
- Good communication, coordination, and leadership skills.
