The Role

We are seeking to appoint an experienced Chinese teacher to join our established Chinese program. Having successfully introduced Chinese 16 years ago, the Infant School is now in a continual phase of ongoing development of the program. Our program places emphasis on student engagement and enjoyment. Experience of teaching Chinese to non-native speakers would be an advantage. The successful applicant will be joining a team of dedicated Chinese language teachers, who demonstrate a willingness to go above and beyond. The ability to work collaboratively as part of a team is an essential element of the role.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning

• Manage an effective, orderly and safe learning environment.
• Plan and deliver a personalised curriculum for the class, and in accordance with the agreed principles and practice of the Chinese Department and the school.
• Differentiate lessons according to the abilities and learning needs of individuals both pastorally and academically.
• Promote independent and active learning by adopting teaching and learning strategies which develop competence and confidence of every child.

Planning & Development

• Contribute to the planning and implementation of curricular and other initiatives according to the School’s Calendar, eg the Lunar New Year Assembly.
• Contribute to individual and team tasks or targets for the Infant School Improvement Plan (SIP) and Self Evaluation Form (SEF).
• Assist the Head of Chinese (Infants) to ensure continuity and progression in the specialist subject across the Infant School and contribute to the maintenance and development of the curriculum. This should include developing cross-curricular links and providing opportunities for children to develop and apply their language skills across different contexts.
• Participate in the Review and Development process to achieve all required competencies and personalise professional learning accordingly, maintaining an accurate and up-to-date record.
• Be supportive of the vision and open to the frequent change that characterises a forward-thinking school such as Tanglin.
• Take part in relevant research and development activities to enhance ongoing professional skills, knowledge and understanding, including professional reflection and evaluation, and maintain an accurate and up-to-date record of that professional development.
• As part of Tanglin’s commitment to professional development, use 30 minutes of non-contact time per term to peer observe colleagues.

Assessment, Recording & Reporting

• Keep detailed records of plans, and of achievements of individual children; developing, in conjunction with the Head of Chinese (Infants), standardised forms of assessment and record keeping.
• Report to parents in accordance with the school’s reporting policy as laid down in the Staff Handbook.
• Be responsible for reporting any concerns about a child to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.

Communication & Liaison

• Follow the School’s policies and procedures with regard to discipline and behaviour, daily routines, duties, homework, leave of absence, and visits, as laid down in the Staff Handbook.
• Fulfil an active supervision role during lunches and break times.
• Fulfil CCA commitment.
