The role

The post presents opportunities to join the engineering academic cluster of Newcastle University in Singapore, becoming valued members of our highly regarded Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering team, which links into our internationally renowned Naval Architecture Marine Engineering and Offshore Engineering in NUiS, Singapore and Marine, Offshore and Subsea Technology (MOST) group and School of Engineering in the UK. Our Engineering cluster group has a broad base of expertise from a wide range of engineering and scientific backgrounds.

• Naval Architecture (Resistance, Propulsion, Seakeeping, Manoeuvring and Stability).

• Investigating pathways to net zero intermodal transport

Specific Responsibilities of Position – Assistant Professor

The successful candidate must be able to provide evidence of a commitment to high quality educational provision and strong student experience, and it is expected that successful candidates would have an emerging publication record with potential for peer reviewed publications at international level in high quality peer reviewed journals and conferences. It is expected that the candidate’s expertise and interests will fit within the existing Singapore campuses scope of activity and will bring strong complementary expertise to the existing research teams. It is expected that the candidate will demonstrate the capacity to successfully supervise research projects. There is also a requirement to serve on campus, faculty and university committees, and to perform administrative duties as required by the Provost and CEO Singapore campus.

Key Accountabilities

• Deliver high-quality teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, developing innovative teaching materials and supporting an excellent student experience.
• Contribute collegiately and collaboratively to the working environment in the Newcastle University Singapore engineering cluster, and sustaining collaboration with Newcastle University UK and other Newcastle University campuses.
• Conduct internationally excellent research in naval architecture, marine and offshore structures, marine technology or a closely engineering related subject area, publishing high-quality outputs and demonstrating impact.
• Support income generation activity, through international research funding opportunities, collaborative grants, and industry-facing continuous professional development.
• Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student projects, as well as PhD students.
• Contribute to curriculum development within Marine Technology, with a focus upon naval architecture, marine and offshore structures, marine technology or a closely engineering related subject area.
• Collaborate in an interdisciplinary way within the University, across campuses, and with external partners to enhance the reach of our educational offer, and research impact.
• Participate in academic leadership and management activities within the School.
• Engage in knowledge exchange and public engagement, working with industry, government, and the wider public.
• Represent the discipline on relevant School, Faculty, or University committees/groups.
• To participate in the management and administration of the Singapore campus contribute to the development of new initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

• Demonstrable subject knowledge in Naval Architecture (Resistance, Propulsion, Seakeeping, Manoeuvring and Stability) or a closely engineering related subject area (demonstrated at application and interview).
• Solid understanding of core engineering principles (demonstrated at application and interview).
• Experience in teaching or assessment at undergraduate or postgraduate levels (demonstrated at application stage).
• Track record of high-quality research at an international level, demonstrated through: High-impact publications in Engineering journals; Conference presentations and invited talks; and Clear research vision with potential for significant future contributions (demonstrated at application and interview).
• Ability to collaborate with academic, industrial, and international partners (demonstrated at application and interview).
• Strong communication and presentation skills, with experience in delivering effective learning materials (demonstrated at interview).
• Excellent time management and prioritisation skills, balancing teaching, research, and administration (demonstrated at application and interview).

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s or master’s degree in naval architecture, marine and offshore structures or a cognate discipline.
• A PhD degree and in-depth subject knowledge/expertise in naval architecture, marine and offshore structures, marine technology or a closely engineering related subject area.

Desirable

• A recognised teaching qualification in Higher Education or equivalent experience (or willingness to work towards attaining a recognised teaching qualification, supported by Newcastle University).
• Membership of a relevant professional engineering institution.
