Role Context

The Platform Screen Door Engineer will support the Lead PSD in delivering one of the railway 's most safety-critical station systems from design development through installation, testing, commissioning, and handover. The position combines technical assurance with active construction supervision and contractor management. Platform Screen Doors must operate reliably as an integrated part of the wider railway environment. This requires precise coordination with rolling stock, signalling, track, stations, electrical systems, civil works, communications, and train control interfaces. The Engineer will help ensure these dependencies are resolved systematically and that completed PSD assets are safe, compliant, tested, and ready for operational service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support delivery of Platform Screen Door systems across design, construction, installation, testing, commissioning, and handover phases.
  • Supervise contractors and project personnel carrying out PSD-related construction activities.
  • Monitor compliance with project health, safety, and environmental requirements during installation and testing.
  • Review Design Build contractor designs, working drawings, interface documents, Method Statements, and technical submissions.
  • Assess PSD designs against client requirements, approved specifications, contractual obligations, and applicable standards.
  • Coordinate interfaces between Platform Screen Doors and rolling stock systems.
  • Manage PSD integration requirements with signalling and train control systems.
  • Liaise with Civil, Trackwork, Systems, Electrical, Communications, and station delivery teams.
  • Identify design and construction interface conflicts and facilitate timely technical resolution.
  • Verify dimensional and physical coordination between PSD installations, station platforms, tracks, and train door positions.
  • Monitor installation sequencing to ensure PSD works remain coordinated with surrounding construction activities.
  • Supervise installation quality and verify that completed works comply with approved drawings and installation procedures.
  • Monitor contractor progress against the contracted schedule and identify emerging delays.
  • Coordinate with Planning and Project Controls teams regarding PSD progress and critical milestones.
  • Provide weekly installation progress reports and additional technical updates when required.
  • Identify potential commercial or contractual issues arising from PSD activities and provide relevant information to claims teams.
  • Review contractor construction methodologies and assess their suitability for safe and efficient execution.
  • Verify that PSD equipment and materials are installed in accordance with approved technical documentation.
  • Oversee Factory Acceptance Testing requirements and review FAT documentation.
  • Support acceptance of manufactured PSD equipment before delivery and installation.
  • Review RAMS submissions associated with the Platform Screen Door system.
  • Assess reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety requirements against project criteria.
  • Support complex safety assessments forming part of the PSD design safety case.
  • Review technical evidence demonstrating system safety and compliance.
  • Coordinate mechanical and electrical aspects of the PSD installation.
  • Monitor door drives, control systems, structural assemblies, electrical interfaces, communication connections, and safety devices.
  • Coordinate PSD control interfaces with signalling and automatic train operation systems.
  • Verify integration requirements associated with train berthing and door alignment.
  • Support technical investigations into installation defects, system faults, interface failures, and performance issues.
  • Review test procedures and confirm readiness for installation testing.
  • Supervise contractor testing before formal transfer to the Testing and Commissioning team.
  • Monitor resolution of defects, test failures, punch-list items, and outstanding technical matters.
  • Ensure installation and testing records are complete and traceable.
  • Coordinate documentation required for subsystem acceptance and final handover.
  • Verify that contractor activities comply with manufacturing, quality, system assurance, and safety processes.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical workshops, interface meetings, progress reviews, and construction coordination sessions.
  • Make informed field decisions when site conditions require timely technical resolution.
  • Maintain clear records of design reviews, installation status, interface matters, testing results, and contractor actions.
  • Support safe transition of completed PSD assets to Testing and Commissioning teams.

The position requires a degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or another closely related discipline. Candidates should have at least 10 years of experience on major civil, railway, transportation, or multidisciplinary infrastructure projects, with demonstrable expertise in Platform Screen Door systems. A strong record in PSD design, installation, delivery, testing, commissioning, and operational integration is essential. The successful candidate should understand the complete Platform Screen Door lifecycle, from supplier design and manufacturing through site installation, system assurance, testing, acceptance, and handover. Experience managing PSD delivery against quality, budget, and contracted schedule requirements is particularly important. Candidates should possess a strong understanding of railway operational requirements, train-platform interfaces, rail safety, and the interaction between PSD systems and rolling stock. Working knowledge of signalling, train control, trackwork, electrical systems, mechanical equipment, communications, and station interfaces is valuable for this multidisciplinary assignment.
