Role Context The RAMS Lead will provide technical leadership across the complete rail system lifecycle, ensuring reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety objectives are defined, analysed, verified, and demonstrated through appropriate engineering evidence. The position will work across infrastructure, rolling stock, systems engineering, manufacturing, testing, commissioning, operations, and maintenance. It will also act as a primary interface with contractors and engineering disciplines to ensure that RAMS requirements, quantified performance targets, hazard controls, and safety obligations remain traceable throughout project delivery.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead RAMS assurance activities across complex rail infrastructure and rolling stock systems.
  • Review, challenge, and monitor contractor RAMS strategies, analyses, submissions, and deliverables.
  • Establish clear reporting on RAMS progress, outstanding issues, risks, and corrective actions.
  • Coordinate RAMS workload across the project team and support effective allocation of technical responsibilities.
  • Develop reliability requirements and quantified failure rate targets for systems and subsystems.
  • Calculate equipment and component failure rates using approved technical data and relevant sources.
  • Develop Reliability Block Diagrams to model system performance and identify critical reliability dependencies.
  • Work with Engineering teams to agree realistic reliability targets for subsystems and vendor-supplied equipment.
  • Develop system and subsystem availability models based on reliability architecture and operational requirements.
  • Perform quantified availability assessments and evaluate whether proposed designs achieve required performance targets.
  • Incorporate reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety requirements into vendor specifications and technical requirements.
  • Review supplier and contractor evidence demonstrating achievement of RAMS performance objectives.
  • Develop Maintainability Analyses and undertake supporting maintainability assessments.
  • Assess maintenance concepts, repair times, equipment accessibility, redundancy, and operational recovery requirements.
  • Support Through Life Cost modelling and assess the relationship between reliability, maintenance, asset performance, and lifecycle expenditure.
  • Act as the principal technical contact for system safety matters within the assigned scope.
  • Lead discussions on safety activities with Engineering teams, contractors, project management, and the client.
  • Interpret contractual safety requirements and communicate applicable obligations to affected technical disciplines.
  • Ensure required safety analyses are planned, completed, reviewed, and delivered in accordance with project schedules.
  • Conduct and review Failure Mode and Effects Analyses.
  • Perform and assess Fault Tree Analyses for safety-critical systems and failure scenarios.
  • Lead hazard identification and risk assessment workshops.
  • Develop, maintain, and monitor hazard registers and safety requirement databases.
  • Track identified hazards through mitigation, verification, and formal closure.
  • Coordinate system safety activities across multiple engineering disciplines and contractors.
  • Verify traceability between hazards, safety requirements, design controls, testing evidence, and acceptance criteria.
  • Support development and management of system requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Use requirements management tools to maintain requirements allocation, traceability, verification status, and compliance evidence.
  • Support system modelling and architecture activities using appropriate engineering tools.
  • Review design concepts and contribute to concept generation, evaluation, and selection.
  • Perform technical assessments of system and subsystem designs from a RAMS and safety perspective.
  • Support verification planning and assess whether test strategies provide adequate evidence of requirements compliance.
  • Provide functional guidance on preparation of Inspection and Test Plans.
  • Verify that appropriate technical personnel review, approve, and implement Inspection and Test Plans.
  • Support Program Management with RAMS status, technical risks, contractor performance, and assurance recommendations.
  • Provide RAMS expertise to Manufacturing, Field Start-up, Design Engineering, Testing and Commissioning, and Operations teams.
  • Review operations and maintenance documentation where RAMS requirements influence asset support strategies.
  • Assess project and technical risks affecting system safety, reliability, availability, maintainability, or lifecycle performance.
  • Maintain clear technical records of RAMS analyses, hazard decisions, design assumptions, requirements, and acceptance evidence.
  • Support independent reviews, assurance activities, technical workshops, and project safety meetings.
  • Ensure RAMS deliverables remain aligned with EN 50126 or equivalent railway lifecycle assurance requirements.
Ideal Profile

The position requires a bachelor 's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or another closely related engineering discipline together with at least 15 years of relevant professional experience. Candidates should have substantial RAMS Engineering experience within complex rail, rolling stock, transportation, or multidisciplinary systems projects. The successful candidate must demonstrate strong capability in quantified reliability and availability analysis rather than only qualitative safety assessment. Practical experience developing Reliability Block Diagrams, calculating failure rates, setting subsystem reliability targets, and conducting availability modelling is important. Candidates should be experienced in both safety and reliability disciplines and capable of applying each within an integrated RAMS framework. Strong knowledge of EN 50126 or an equivalent railway RAMS standard is required, together with a clear understanding of Engineering Safety Management processes and objectives. Experience conducting Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, hazard identification, risk assessments, and safety workshops is essential. The role requires experience maintaining hazard and safety requirement databases and managing safety issues through structured verification and closure. Knowledge of requirements management and systems modelling tools is highly valuable. Experience with DOORS and System Architect is preferred. The successful candidate should also understand verification planning, lifecycle engineering, operations and maintenance requirements, and Through Life Cost considerations. Strong contractor management, technical leadership, analytical reasoning, reporting, multidisciplinary coordination, and client-facing communication skills are essential.
