Role Context

The Planning Engineer will provide the scheduling structure and performance intelligence needed to keep complex projects aligned with contractual milestones and delivery objectives. The role covers the full project lifecycle, linking engineering, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, and handover activities into a coordinated master program. A major responsibility is identifying schedule pressure before it becomes a critical delivery issue. Through critical path analysis, progress verification, trend monitoring, and schedule-impact assessment, the engineer will provide early warning of delays, interface conflicts, procurement risks, and resource constraints. The position will also support commercial and contractual decision-making. Reliable delay records, milestone verification, progress measurement, and schedule narratives will help project leaders evaluate claims, certify progress, develop recovery strategies, and communicate project status accurately to stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop integrated master schedules covering engineering, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, and handover.
  • Establish logical activity sequencing based on project scope, interfaces, and contractual requirements.
  • Review contractor work breakdown structures for completeness and alignment with project objectives.
  • Evaluate Level 1 through Level 4 schedules submitted by contractors.
  • Verify schedule logic, activity durations, milestones, calendars, and constraints.
  • Maintain current integrated project schedules throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Develop progress measurement methodologies suited to contractual and project requirements.
  • Align progress measurement with approved schedules of values and milestone structures.
  • Monitor critical path and near-critical activities for emerging delivery risks.
  • Identify schedule deviations and provide timely warning to project management.
  • Analyze resource constraints that may affect planned progress.
  • Prepare planned versus actual S-curves for performance monitoring.
  • Develop resource histograms and supporting schedule analytics.
  • Produce short-term and three-month look-ahead schedules for management review.
  • Review contractor weekly and monthly planning submissions.
  • Confirm that look-ahead programs remain consistent with the approved master schedule.
  • Verify reported physical progress against field records and supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate with site teams to validate construction progress.
  • Review progress evidence before incorporating updates into project schedules.
  • Analyze schedule slippage and determine causes affecting delivery.
  • Perform critical path analysis to understand the impact of delays.
  • Develop schedule recovery and acceleration scenarios.
  • Recommend corrective actions to restore planned project performance.
  • Assess the schedule implications of changes, constraints, and emerging project events.
  • Support extension-of-time claim evaluations through structured delay analysis.
  • Develop chronological records of delay events and associated schedule impacts.
  • Perform schedule-impact assessments for contractual review.
  • Track long-lead equipment from procurement through manufacturing and dispatch.
  • Monitor delivery, site receipt, installation, and associated schedule dependencies.
  • Identify procurement delays that could affect construction or commissioning milestones.
  • Integrate schedules from multiple project sections into a coordinated program.
  • Manage technical, operational, construction, and energization interfaces within the schedule.
  • Record schedule assumptions, constraints, and planning basis information.
  • Maintain delay logs and schedule-related risk registers.
  • Support regular schedule risk reviews with project teams.
  • Prepare executive dashboards summarizing project progress and schedule exposure.
  • Develop detailed schedule narratives for weekly and monthly reporting.
  • Prepare milestone trackers for management and stakeholder review.
  • Communicate schedule trends, risks, and forecast completion dates clearly.
  • Support invoice certification by verifying schedule-linked milestone achievement.
  • Review progress against contractual requirements before payment recommendations.
  • Coordinate with engineering, procurement, construction, commercial, and project management teams.
  • Resolve scheduling conflicts across parallel workstreams.
  • Support resource optimization where competing activities affect project priorities.
  • Maintain accurate schedule records and historical baselines for audit and analysis.
  • Manage multiple schedules simultaneously while maintaining consistency and data quality.
Ideal Profile Candidates

Candidates should hold a bachelor 's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or an equivalent discipline and have at least 10 years of professional experience in planning, scheduling, and project controls. Strong experience with large-scale construction or infrastructure programs is required. Familiarity with power, heavy industrial, or other technically complex projects will be particularly valuable. Advanced proficiency in Primavera P6 or an equivalent enterprise planning platform is essential. Candidates should be capable of developing and interrogating complex logic-driven schedules rather than relying only on basic activity tracking. The successful candidate must have strong knowledge of critical path methodology, delay analysis, schedule-impact assessment, resource loading, work breakdown structures, and schedule constraints. Practical understanding of earned-value concepts and progress measurement methodologies is also important. Candidates should be able to validate reported physical progress and identify inconsistencies between schedule data and actual site performance. Strong capability with Microsoft Project, Excel, and data visualization tools is required for reporting and schedule analysis. Experience evaluating extension-of-time claims, developing recovery schedules, and preparing acceleration strategies is highly desirable. PMP, PRINCE2, or comparable project management certification is preferred. Strong analytical judgment, communication skills, stakeholder management capability, and attention to detail are essential for success in this role.
