Role Context
The AGL Lead Engineer will take technical ownership of critical lighting and electrical systems that enable safe aircraft movement during daytime, nighttime, and reduced-visibility operations. The position covers the complete engineering lifecycle from design review and multidisciplinary coordination through installation, system verification, commissioning, and airport handover. This role has direct impact on operational safety and airfield availability. By coordinating lighting infrastructure with pavements, civil works, electrical distribution, communications, airfield operations, and regulatory requirements, the engineer will help ensure that complex airside systems are reliable, maintainable, correctly integrated, and ready for continuous airport operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Airfield Ground Lighting engineering activities across design, construction, testing, commissioning, and operational readiness stages.
- Provide technical direction to AGL engineers, consultants, contractors, designers, and specialist equipment suppliers.
- Establish engineering review procedures, design criteria, technical requirements, and quality expectations for AGL packages.
- Review engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, technical reports, design submissions, and contractor documentation.
- Evaluate runway edge, centerline, threshold, and runway end lighting systems.
- Review taxiway centerline lighting, taxiway edge lighting, stop bars, runway guard lights, and rapid exit taxiway lighting.
- Assess apron lighting, aircraft stand lighting, approach lighting, and Precision Approach Path Indicator systems.
- Verify AGL designs against ICAO Annex 14, relevant FAA Advisory Circulars, client standards, project specifications, and airport operational requirements.
- Examine photometric calculations, fixture layouts, cable routes, circuit configurations, and system performance criteria.
- Lead technical reviews aimed at improving reliability, maintainability, constructability, energy efficiency, and lifecycle performance.
- Review Constant Current Regulators, Airfield Lighting Control Systems, primary circuits, secondary cabling, isolation transformers, vaults, and equipment rooms.
- Assess grounding, bonding, lightning protection, power redundancy, and electrical resilience arrangements.
- Coordinate AGL requirements with electrical distribution, pavement construction, drainage, civil infrastructure, communications, and airport systems.
- Manage technical interfaces affecting runways, taxiways, rapid exit taxiways, aprons, aircraft stands, maintenance zones, and operational areas.
- Review installation requirements for inset lighting fixtures, ducts, pits, chambers, cable routes, and field equipment.
- Coordinate AGL interfaces with pavement construction to minimize conflicts and avoid rework.
- Support phased construction and commissioning strategies where airport operations must remain active during project delivery.
- Review contractor shop drawings, material submissions, method statements, requests for information, and technical queries.
- Conduct airfield inspections to verify that installed systems match approved drawings, specifications, aviation standards, and quality requirements.
- Monitor workmanship involving lighting fixtures, cabling, transformers, CCR equipment, control systems, and associated field components.
- Resolve technical issues affecting AGL construction progress, system integration, safety, or commissioning.
- Witness insulation resistance testing, cable testing, circuit verification, lighting intensity measurements, and control functionality testing.
- Support integrated commissioning between AGL equipment, airport operational systems, and relevant control platforms.
- Verify commissioning records, test certificates, inspection documentation, and technical acceptance information.
- Coordinate with the client, airport operator, air traffic control representatives, consultants, contractors, regulators, and specialist suppliers.
- Participate in engineering workshops, design reviews, technical approvals, operational readiness meetings, and regulatory coordination.
- Work with airfield operations personnel to maintain safe implementation practices throughout construction and commissioning.
- Monitor contractor compliance with approved quality plans, installation procedures, inspection requirements, and technical standards.
- Participate in technical audits, compliance reviews, inspections, and corrective action programs.
- Prepare design review comments, engineering assessments, technical recommendations, risk updates, and progress reports.
- Maintain records of technical decisions, approvals, design changes, field observations, and engineering resolutions.
- Report significant AGL risks, progress constraints, commissioning issues, and technical challenges to project management.
- Support preparation of operating manuals, maintenance information, asset registers, as-built documentation, and final airport handover packages.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor 's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Aviation Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Minimum 10 years of professional experience in Airfield Ground Lighting design, technical review, installation, testing, and commissioning.
- Previous involvement in major international airport, airfield, aviation, or transportation infrastructure programs.
- Extensive practical knowledge of runway lighting, taxiway lighting, apron lighting, approach lighting, and airfield electrical systems.
- Strong experience with Constant Current Regulators, AGL control systems, electrical circuits, isolation transformers, and airfield lighting vaults.
- Detailed understanding of ICAO Annex 14 Volume I requirements.
- Knowledge of FAA AC 150-5340 and FAA AC 150-5345 series requirements.
- Familiarity with IEC electrical standards and airport operational safety requirements.
- Experience reviewing designs, contractor submissions, installation methodologies, testing records, and commissioning documentation.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with airport authorities, consultants, contractors, aviation regulators, and specialist equipment vendors.
- Experience using airfield lighting design tools, photometric calculations, and technical analysis methods.
- Familiarity with BIM coordination and multidisciplinary engineering workflows.
- Strong technical judgment when resolving complex airfield electrical and construction interfaces.
- Master 's degree in Electrical Engineering, Airport Systems Engineering, or a related field is advantageous.
- Professional Engineer, Chartered Engineer, or equivalent professional registration is desirable.
- Experience with international airport expansion or greenfield airport programs is highly beneficial.
- Knowledge of CAT I, CAT II, and CAT III precision approach lighting requirements is preferred.
- Experience coordinating AGL interfaces with Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control Systems is valuable.
- Familiarity with FIDIC, Design-Build, EPC, PMC, or Delivery Partner project environments is advantageous.
