Job summary

The Sister/Charge Nurse will be responsible for the daily clinical and operational management of the paediatric clinical areas and the professional development of the staff within those areas. The Sister/Charge Nurse will provide support to all staff and will be required to work in partnership with all multi-disciplinary teams.

They will be responsible for providing leadership and professional development for the nursing and support workers within the services.

Main duties of the job

To be a clinical expert within the Paediatric speciality whilst delivering high levels of direct care to patients.

To have responsibility for resolving patient/parent complaints relating to clinical care/operational issues within the area.

To coordinate all Safeguarding referrals/concerns liaising with other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

Maintaining appropriate staffing levels within set budgets and identify resource/staffing issues in advance.

Be responsible for providing a 24 hour nursing service for the clinical area demonstrating effective leadership and management skills.

To effectively manage the allocated budget. You will also be expected to deliver savings and efficiencies in line with the trust's objectives.

To develop ward/unit policies and guidelines and to ensure these are implemented and audited to ensure compliance and best practice.

To participate/lead in the development of Ward/Department policies and guidelines and ensure these are readily communicated to all staff.

To participate/lead in the investigation of complaints, incidents and other events, under the direction of the Paediatric Matron and implement any required actions.

To lead on allocated responsibilities when instructed to do so from the Paediatric Matron.

Clinical

Lead on assessing planning and implementing high quality care, and evaluating care options for patients in the clinical area, in line with the Trust values and objectives.

Ensure the safe custody, maintenance and administration of medication, in accordance with established Trust policy.

Ensure that patient flow and the management of beds is effective and safe.
