Job description

As a Public Health Intelligence Analyst, you will be responsible for analysing, evaluating, and interpreting data from a range of sources. These data will be used to inform the development of public health programmes and included in statutory reports and other publications. You will have a key role in supporting the development of the Director of Public Health Annual Report and other health needs and health impact assessments.

You will produce data reports to monitor progress on addressing the impact of the social determinants of health as well a support the development and implementation of our population health dashboard and other health intelligence products including indicator data packs that will inform partnership programmes of work.

The role will require a comprehensive understanding of health data, socioeconomic determinants of health, life course approaches and relevant data sources to be able to provide health intelligence advice to other members of the Public Health Directorate and colleagues within Hywel Dda University Health Board and other partner agencies.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be able to apply a range of statistical techniques to analyse data from a number of sources, using MS Office and other software packages required for data analysis and presentation. The post holder will also be able to compile statistical reports and communicate findings to a range of audiences.

The post holder will research, analyse, review, and publish health related information as well as lead on a wide spectrum of public health work such as needs assessment, health equity audits, health impact assessments and analysis of health service utilisation to examine trends and improvement over time.

The post holder will work strategically with health system partners to ensure population health needs are identified and met. Applicants should demonstrate their ability to collaborate with professionals from a variety of directorates and organisations. Using knowledge of public health datasets, the post holder should be able to provide balanced advice and guidance to senior decision makers in a political setting.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive individual with excellent organisational and communication skills, with the ability to work under pressure. Experience of working within NHS organisations and public health would be an advantage.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties.

We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services.

We work in partnership with the three local authorities, as well as public, private and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers.

Our services are provided in:

  • Four main hospitals: Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth; Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli; and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest
  • Five community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron Hospital in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals in Pembrokeshire
  • Two integrated care centres: Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion, and several other community settings
  • 47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers
  • Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services

Qualifications and Knowledge
  • A Master's degree, or equivalent experience, that includes substantial components related to analysis, statistics or data science.
  • Understand and complies with legal and ethical requirements for data privacy, security and confidentiality, such as the Data Protection Act 2018, and the Caldicott principles.
  • Knowledge and experience of statistical techniques and procedures in terms of their application to public health analysis.

  • Knowledge of the Code of Practice for Official Statistics, or other equivalent quality frameworks

  • Extensive experience of utilising large and complex datasets to answer questions.
