Community Perinatal Mental Health Nursery Nurse - Job advert

Full time - 37.5 hours

Permanent post - Band 4

Specialist Mother and Baby Mental Health Service (SMABS) is a community perinatal mental health service commissioned with the Bradford District Care Foundation Trust (BDCFT). We cover the catchment area of Bradford, Airedale and Craven there are approximately 8,000 live births per year. The main maternity hospital sites being Bradford (6,000 births) and Airedale (2,000 births).

The SMABS provides mental health care and treatment for women and their families during pregnancy till first year post delivery. The team is a multi-disciplinary team, which provides support for women who are experiencing moderate to severe mental ill health in pregnancy or present with a high risk of relapse during pregnancy and the perinatal period.

Main duties of the job

Perinatal community nursery nurse will be part of our perinatal mental healthteam. The successful post holder will work with mother, baby/babies and families during antenatal and postnatal period providing research-based interventions and offering support and advice.

o To demonstrate a sound knowledge of caring effectively for infants up to 24 months old and to share these skills with women and their families open to our service.

o To assist mothers with perinatal mental health problems to care for their babies, ensure that the emotional and physical needs of babies are met and engage in activities to promote the mother-infant relationship. To work with other caregivers in the family to support the care of the infant.

o To be part of the multi-disciplinary team utilising skills and knowledge in supporting and advising mums across all domains of caring for their baby.

o To assist in the management and organisation of work as required.

o To form part of the development of mothers and other staff in the PerinatalTeams knowledge and skills in caring for infants.

Job responsibilities

Job Overview Continued-

We are currently looking to recruit experienced and highly motivated and enthusiastic Nursery Nurse to join our perinatal mental health team with a specialist interest in improving care for women and their families in the area and who is open to learning & developing their skills in perinatal mental health. Experience of working in the Perinatal Mental Health field is desirable: a keen interest in this specialist area is essential. Our work can be challenging & requires excellent communication skills & a knowledge of safeguarding protocols ensuring thoughtfulness of the unborn & other children in the family at all times.

The role is dynamic and challenging. The post holder will form part of the development of other staff in the Perinatal Teams knowledge and skills in caring for infants, and Perinatal Community MH Nursery Nurses/Team members are also expected to contribute to maternal mental health awareness training to Midwives, Health Visitors and other Mental Health colleagues. Perinatal Mental Health nursery nurses provide advice and support with antenatal and postnatal support with the transition to parenthood. This includes advice and support around bonding/attachment, practical childcare and child development advice and support. Working within the MDT, they have a particular role support the team to hear the voice of the infant, and therefore support assessments.

We offer a comprehensive induction package and clinicians within the service are able to access specialist training both internally and externally in order to develop a high level of perinatal expertise regarding perinatal mental health conditions, risks and relapse factors, and evidence-based interventions. In addition, practitioners gain a growing knowledge base on infant mental health, development and attachment and bonding.

Qualifications
  • o CACHE Level 3 or o Diploma in childcare & Education (NNEB) or o Diploma in childcare Studies (BTEC) or o NVQ Level 3 in childcare & Education
  • Experience of Video Interactive Guidance or Infant massage.
Experience
  • Demonstrate post-qualified experience working with children and young adults and those with complex health and safeguarding needs.
  • Extensive experience of working within community health visiting services Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Experience of working with community, working with in diverse communities.
  • Experience and Knowledge of child development.
  • Previous experience working in a perinatal mental health service/setting.
  • Experience of working in a mental health setting.
