Job description

Our client is seeking a reliable, proactive, and environmentally conscious Waste Management Technician to support the delivery of the waste management operations at HMP Millsike. Working alongside the Waste Management Instructor, you will assist in supervising prisoner workers, ensuring the safe and efficient collection, segregation, and disposal of waste across the prison estate. You will contribute to the prison's environmental sustainability targets, including achieving 90% recycling rates, reducing single-use plastics, and supporting net zero ambitions. This role plays a vital part in maintaining a safe, compliant, and sustainable waste management system while providing meaningful, skills-based work opportunities for prisoners.

Responsibilities
  • Preparing and maintaining workshop and training areas, tools, and materials related to waste management and recycling activities
  • Supporting practical sessions and demonstrations aligned with City & Guilds Level 2 Waste Management qualifications
  • Assisting learners during training activities, providing guidance, motivation, and feedback
  • Monitoring and maintaining waste segregation, recycling systems, and safety procedures
  • Conducting safety checks and ensuring compliance with environmental and health & safety standards
  • Helping with administrative tasks such as attendance, progress tracking, and record keeping
  • Working collaboratively with prison staff to promote learner achievement and positive workshop outcomes
  • Support the management of stock, consumables, and waste-related materials, ensuring accurate records and appropriate storage
  • Ensure all tools, PPE, and equipment are accounted for, properly maintained, and safely used in accordance with local security and H&S standards
Experience
  • A Level 2 qualification (or equivalent experience) in Waste Management, Environmental Services, or a related field (desirable)
  • Practical experience in waste handling, recycling, or environmental operations
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • A calm, organised, and supportive approach with a focus on safety and engagement
  • A genuine interest in helping learners develop new skills and confidence
  • Willingness to work towards teaching or assessing qualifications if not already held
  • Experience in a vocational training or prison education environment (desirable)
  • Knowledge of City & Guilds Waste Management qualifications and related standards
  • Awareness of sustainability principles, restorative practices, or supporting learners with additional needs
