Job summary

A cultural heritage institution is seeking a qualified Railway Industry National Archivist to conduct a survey of records in the railway industry. About us

Science Museum Group (SMG), which includes the National Railway Museum (NRM) in York, have received funding to recruit a Railway Industry National Archivist to conduct a survey of records of the modern railway industry as held by current rail franchises across England, Wales and Scotland.


About the role

The Railway Industry National Archivist will join us on a fixed term contract until April 2025. In this role, you will conduct a survey of records of the modern railway industry as held by current rail franchises across England, Wales and Scotland. The archivist will lead on a project to work with The Railway Heritage Designation Advisory Board (RHDAB) and the rail industry to identify and survey the records held by rail franchises and make recommendations for designation.

About you

Joining us, you will be a qualified Archivist with experience of working with collections management software, and an awareness of managing digital archives, or digital preservation. You will bring a credible and collaborative approach, with the ability to build relationships with various internal and external stakeholders, subject specialists and senior management. Ultimately, you will be able to advocate for railway archives and ensure a key part of railway heritage is not lost for current and future generations.
