The opportunity

It’s an exciting time to join Markel as our business grows. We have recently moved into brand-new innovative offices in Leeds city centre right next to the train station, and we currently have a new opportunity for an Underwriter to join our highly respected team (3 days in the office / 2 days from home). This exciting opportunity is based within the renewals department and you will be dealing with a wide variety of Professional and Management risks and wider financial lines risks including Cyber and Technology risks. This is an area of considerable growth and a great opportunity to join an established but growing team. This team is often an integral part of projects developing the book and improving the way we do business.

The role of the underwriting support is to work as part of the Professional and Management risks team in providing an excellent underwriting service for underwriters and brokers in the UK. You will be required to develop and maintain good relationships internally and externally. You will work as a member of a team and be pro-active and willing to help brokers and underwriters across all classes of business.

What you’ll be doing
  • Underwriting risks in accordance within own personal level of underwriting authority
  • Ensure incoming calls to the team are answered promptly and professionally
  • Diarise and follow up renewals with brokers with the purpose of securing and retaining business
  • Deal with internal and external enquiries by email and telephone
  • Managing diary items and chasing responses
  • Following up outstanding renewal information with brokers via phone and email
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with the Technical teams in Leeds and the wider business
  • Assisting the team and wider business with ad hoc projects
  • Demonstrate and promote a thorough knowledge of company guidelines and authority levels in order to achieve profitability and underwriting objectives
  • Provide excellent service to our brokers, prioritising renewals and mid-term adjustments and referrals whether emanating from our broker e-trading platform or by email/phone to ensure deadlines are met
  • Underwrite renewals within the defined underwriting authority
  • Actively manage and provide an efficient service to brokers to maintain good relationships
  • Attend underwriting meetings as required throughout the year to provide insight into developments, trends and feedback on market conditions
  • Manage renewal cases working as appropriate with the broker to secure renewal and upsell/cross-sell additional covers
Our must haves
  • Proven relevant insurance experience and demonstrable technical skills
  • Background and experience in our classes of business is desirable, but not essential
  • Excellent written, spoken communication and numerical skills
  • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Demonstrable IT skills including MS Office
  • Be studying for/or be willing to study for CII qualifications
