Home Insurance Underwriter

An excellent opportunity for an experienced Home Insurance Underwriter to join a growing insurance organisation, supporting household underwriting across new business, renewals and mid‑term changes while delivering compliant, customer‑focused outcomes.

SALARY: £28,000 to £36,000 per annum + Benefits

LOCATION: Hybrid working – 3 days from the office in Leeds (Mon to Weds) and 2 days from home (Thurs & Fri)

JOB TYPE: Full‑Time, Permanent

WORKING HOURS: Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week

JOB OVERVIEW

We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a Home Insurance Underwriter to join a collaborative and technically focused home insurance team.

As a Home Insurance Underwriter you will underwrite household policies across new business, renewals, mid‑term adjustments and endorsements, ensuring decisions are made within agreed limits of authority and internal service standards.

The Home Insurance Underwriter will support senior colleagues with referrals, complaints handling, audits and underwriting analysis, while contributing to product development and positive customer outcomes.

This role offers hybrid working, a central Leeds office location and the opportunity to develop your underwriting career within a supportive and professional environment.

DUTIES
  • Processing new business, renewals, mid‑term changes, endorsements, quotations and reinsurance tasks
  • Underwriting household policies in line with underwriting guidelines, limits of authority and technical philosophies
  • Reviewing claim referrals and potential misrepresentations, producing audits and drafting correspondence for sign‑off
  • Assisting with first contact resolution and non‑escalated complaints, including logging, auditing and letter drafting
  • Responding to internal and external telephone and email enquiries in line with service standards
  • Completing daily and weekly work returns accurately and within required timescales
  • Acting as a referral point for colleagues within underwriting and claims, escalating where appropriate
  • Supporting product reviews, pricing analysis and underwriting data analysis as required
  • Ensuring all work meets regulatory, Consumer Duty and information security requirements
  • Contributing to effective communication and cooperation across departments
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
ESSENTIAL
  • Previous experience in home or household underwriting within the insurance industry
  • Proven experience of underwriting risks and working within limits of authority
  • Experience dealing with misrepresentations and referral cases
  • Ability to analyse underwriting data and support product reviews
  • Experience of underwriting household insurance policies
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills with a good understanding of Consumer Duty
  • High level of accuracy with strong attention to detail
  • Effective time management and ability to manage workloads
  • Confidence communicating directly with customers and intermediaries
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel and email systems
DESIRABLE
  • ACII qualification or equivalent
  • Willingness to study towards professional insurance qualifications
  • GCSEs or equivalent in English and Mathematics
  • A flexible and proactive approach to work
  • Ability to adapt within a fast‑paced underwriting environment
