Transformer Rigger – Substations & BESS

Location: UK-wide (travel required)

Contract Type: Permanent or Contract

Salary / Rate:

Permanent: Up to £50,000 (DOE)

Contract: £250‑£280 per day

The Role

We are looking for an experienced Transformer Rigger to support the delivery of HV substation, BESS and supergrid transformer projects across the UK. This is a hands‑on role focused on the safe movement, positioning and installation of large power transformers and associated heavy electrical plant.

You will work as part of specialist site teams on complex, safety‑critical projects, supporting transformer delivery through to final positioning and readiness for commissioning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Off‑load, rig, jack, skid and position power and supergrid transformers
  • Carry out heavy lifting operations in line with approved lift plans and RAMS
  • Use cranes, jacking systems, skates, winches and lifting frames safely and effectively
  • Sling and signal during complex and tandem crane lifts
  • Assist with mechanical assembly, including radiators, conservators and transformer accessories
  • Install and remove temporary works such as beams, gantries and track systems
  • Work closely with Crane Supervisors, Appointed Persons, Site Managers and OEM engineers
  • Maintain high standards of safety and housekeeping at all times
  • Comply fully with site rules, permit‑to‑work systems and CDM requirements
Essential Experience & Skills
  • Proven experience as a Transformer Rigger on substation or power infrastructure projects
  • Strong background in heavy lifting and transformer installation
  • Ability to work from detailed lift plans and method statements
  • Good understanding of safety‑critical environments
  • Willingness to travel to sites across the UK
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Full UK driving licence
Desirable Qualifications
  • CPCS / NPORS Slinger Signaller or Rigging qualification
  • Substation Safety Passport
  • Banksman or Crane Lift experience
  • SMSTS / SSSTS (advantageous but not essential)
  • Manual Handling, Working at Height
