Job Summary
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Trainee Engineering Technician within our Orthotic Research and Locomotor Assessment Unit. The role involves training an engineering technician to provide rehabilitation engineering and medical device support services both at the hospital, in the community and beyond. The postholder will play a key role in the design, manufacture, monitoring and maintenance of orthotic devices and other assistive technologies that are used to enhance the treatment of severely disabled patients and will involve contact with patients, including children who have moderate to severe mobility disabilities.
Main Duties
- Assist the Senior Engineering Technician and other Rehab Engineering staff in the build, supply and maintenance of patient devices to customary levels of engineering precision.
- Assist with general tasks around the workshop, such as maintenance, tidying and stock level monitoring.
- Assist the Movement Analysis team with routine tasks, such as video recording patient activity and safely transferring those recordings to relevant storage media.
- Assist the Patient Pathway Co‑ordinator in the general administration of patient devices, such as parcelling and sending devices to patients and checking devices have arrived from suppliers.

Job Description
- Work as a member of a multi‑disciplinary team that includes orthopaedic consultants, physiotherapists, orthotists, engineers, administrative staff and other professional disciplines.
- Have direct contact with patients, including children, with severe mobility disabilities and accompanying communication and learning difficulties.
- Set up, adjust and customise equipment and show due regard to patient safety and ease of use.
- Record patient use of assistive technologies using video cameras and store images securely on the ORLAU server.
- Maintain records of work undertaken for inclusion in patient notes and to comply with the ORLAU Quality Management System to ISO 9001, ISO 13485 and other management requirements.
- Plan own work schedule to ensure that equipment for patient supply is prepared beforehand in a timely manner in accordance with the clinical diary.
Technical Responsibilities
- Undertake a wide range of manufacturing tasks to customary levels of engineering precision, including machining, fitting, welding (TIG) and fabrication.
- Manufacture, assemble, adjust, modify, service and maintain highly specialist equipment for use by patients with physical disabilities.
- Assist with the receipt, repair and dispatch of externally manufactured assistive technology devices.
- Maintain high engineering standards and appropriate levels of precision to ensure quality of product.
- Execute programmes of servicing and preventative maintenance of workshop tools and plant. Identify and manage necessary repair work (in‑house or sub‑contract) to workshop plant and equipment. Calibrate precision workshop measuring instruments.
Research and Development
- Contribute to ORLAU's research and development activities by participating in group discussions, suggesting new developments in patient equipment and manufacturing components for prototype designs under the supervision of senior colleagues.
Management/Organisational Responsibilities
- Organise own workload, with support from senior colleagues, to ensure completion dates agreed with patients and staff are met.
- Monitor levels of stock items such as medical device consumables, raw materials, tooling and other goods and request purchase by others as necessary in a timely manner.
Education and Training
- Participate in training courses to build skills, as specified by the senior engineering staff and technicians.
Person Specification
- Essential Qualifications/training BTEC National Certificate/Diploma or City & Guilds Certification in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent combination of training and experience in Mechanical Engineering.
- Desirable Aptitude for electronics/computing; experience of working with children and/or vulnerable adults.
- Skills and competences Basic computer literacy.
