This post will contribute to tackling inequalities in health by promoting and supporting people to stop smoking. It focuses on engaging with people in all maternity settings and offering them practical support to change their behaviour to achieve their own choices and goals while supporting them to make positive health changes that improve pregnancy, birth outcomes and longer‑term family health.

The post holder will work with the tobacco dependency team to achieve element 1 of the Saving Babies’ Lives Care Bundle and reduce smoking in pregnancy by providing individualised stop‑smoking support to women and families in a flexible and innovative way. As a smoke‑free champion across the Trust, you will provide information, advice and support to patients and staff alike on stopping smoking, minimising harm from tobacco, and health‑related issues in line with best guidance and protocols. You will be involved in awareness‑raising sessions, reinforce staff training to reduce harm from tobacco, and promote the Trust smoke‑free policy.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide support throughout pregnancy and the post‑natal period, using interventions such as motivational interviewing, carbon monoxide (CO) monitoring and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).
  • Prioritise, implement and evaluate patient care in consultation with the Registered Practitioner, in accordance with Trust policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines.
  • Ensure that all referrals to the Tobacco Dependency Team (TDT) are completed in a timely manner.
  • Work with the Tobacco Dependency Midwife to ensure areas within the hospital and community have the correct equipment and supplies, and provide CO training if necessary to other staff.

Person Specification
Education
  • Minimum Level 3 qualification in Healthcare and substantial experience delivering stop-smoking interventions/support, plus completion of appropriate short courses, e.g., NCSCT.
  • NCSCT Certified Practitioner Training including Smoking and Pregnancy, or willingness to undertake within 6 months in post.
  • GCSE at grade 3/C or above or Functional Skills level 2 in Maths and English.
  • Immunisation administration training.
Experience and knowledge
  • Good understanding of evidence-based practice in smoking cessation, the consequences of smoking in pregnancy and benefits of quitting.
  • Understanding of human behaviour in relation to making healthy lifestyle changes and decisions.
  • Understanding of maternity care and experience working within a maternity or similar setting.
Skills
  • Understands own responsibility.
